My clutch started slipping today

on the motorway towing a small caravan, when the wind or incline caused enough drag it started to slip. I am planning to get it sorted ASAP, is there anything else to check while I am on the job? Cheers :thumb2

not good news mate, not the cheapest of jobs, are you sure it is slipping, do the test hand brake on hard 5th gear floor the throttle drop the clutch, engine should stall if it continues to rev but a bit slower your clutch has gone, Rick

mine replaced but plate ok turned out to be a dodgy slave, also replaced master cylinder and flexi pipe.you can get a bit of adjustment at clutch pedal.
i bought clutch kit £120, slave £47.50 master £37.75,£150 for fitting.

Jim had his done for £350 all in. Im gettingmine done this year too, so personally id be having the fluids changed as well (clutch and gearbox)

Oh and whilst your box is off get them to clean your cps.

And I reckon the bearing on the first motion shaft needs replacing too, might as well do it while the clutch is being looked at.

I can feel a new van coming on at this rate :doh

Cheers Rick, I have another issue I am trying to fix first and then I will try your test :thumb2

Could anyone tell me if this is the right clutch kit for my van:

the second one down - 5/1996-7/2003 (ROUND HEADLIGHT) UK MODEL

Cheers

yes that looks like the right one, but I have not delt with Milners as yet and to be honest I prefer to deal with local suppliers, a bit dearer maybe but if something is wrong it is easily sorted, Rick

i have had a few bits off milners now and to be honest not a single problem yet...:thumb2

Rick, I have tried you test 3 times, warm, warmer and full running temp, up to the red line dumped clutch as quick as my dodgy ankle will allow (twisted it at the weekend after being plied with strong drink by a fellow club member)

anyway, within a second (maybe less) the engine stalled, tried pulling away in third all sorts, can't make it slip.

But, when it had the oil consumption issue and the oil was very low could this have generate excess heat and cause it too slip under load?

I have refitted the intercooler today, it had a sizable crack, been replaced and the old T2 goes like 'excrement off a polished spade' I hadn't realised it had lost so much power :thumb2

help appreciated as tomorrow is my last day for ordering a new clutch before the weekend, i am tempted to leave it now until it's slipping good and proper :thumb2

if it stalled the engine then your clutch is fine drive wise, if it is hard to go into gear then it could be dragging, but otherwise your clutch is fine no need to replace it, Rick

it doesn't seem hard to get it into gear either, on the very odd occasion I have had to press it twice to get in reverse, but they are all a bit like that some times. No issues at all today :nenau

stuff it then i'll leave it for a bit.

I have no excuse to come down for a visit now!

Cheers Rick!

If you have to do your clutch please take pics, if that is a bust roller bearing I found part of today I may need to change my gearbox soon:eek:

tried your test again tonight after a decent run :doh

clutch is without a doubt slipping when it is hot, plan to change it Saturday and can do pics - but - if you are doing it yourself try to ignore the ramps and stuff as I intend to cheat a bit :naughty

Thanks for all the advice everyone, ordering the clutch from milners who can do an OEM quality replacement for £159 including VAT and next day delivery.

if you change the box yourself and aint done it before, allow plenty of time and for loss of skin! heavy box as well. did first one with car jacked on axle stands lay on my back (not great fun)

Cheers Jim, thanks for the advice this week! I have the assistance of my daughters partner who is a main dealer workshop technician and used to 4x4 stuff, and the use of a workshop with ramps - so basically I'll be watching :augie
