The time has come. Santa brought me an engine hoist and to celebrate an average weekend after Christmas , the old engine is coming out
Question.
Is it easier/quicker to take the whole engine box combo out or split box off first ?

personally id say easier just engine out! but engine and box together easier for back in, less swearing involved:lol

unless your new hoist is seriously heavy then engine on its own will be all it can cope with, even if it is a real biggie I cannot imagine any kind of balance can be achieved with the box hanging on the engine, Rick

yeah i didn't even consider weight as im lucky with a 5t pully block on a girder.
my brother in law used to run transit vans and that soured me for putting engines back in on there own the un balanced tilt realy helps putting them back in but you have to jack the gearbox into place!
but i havent done a terrano engine out for about 15 years so im probable talking crap:lol

Agreed about the tilt helping and like you I have a block on a beam as well as a mobile hoist, and if I lifted the chassis on the two post lift to get the height, but I doubt the box would come through the engine bay, it may be possible to drop the whole lot down onto the floor though but have not looked at that possibility, Rick

Well the engine is out. It was a struggle as we thought we could simply unbolt the g/box and haul away. No such luck. The blasted sump clashes against the front diff so you can't quite clear the spigot
So we undid the clutch and that gave us just enough room. Its going to fun on the return trip

cannot imagine how you will centre the plate, me thinks you will have to drop the front diff, a lot easier now the engine is out, Rick

Agreed. We spent an hour or so over a beer trying to come up with a cunning plan ! Settled on more beer :lol

I guess if you are lucky and have a well machined pressure plate you may just centre it by eye around the perimeter, or place the pressure plate on its back, put 3 small drops of superglue on the face equally spaced, and place the centre plate on it accurately, then carefully offer it to the flywheel, I am clutching at straws here as never done one like that before, Rick

Compression was down and puffing oil out like a Texas well. I've another block ready to go but just been too busy to get onto it.
New one also has that hi lift cam going in it and manual pump conversion.
Can you guys see the pics ?
