Hi GoonerCarp, the discs are better than the originals, as they don't fade when you try and stop with 2 tonne behind you.. Better on emergency braking as well.
I still have to be careful on wet roads as the front occasionally picks up, this combined with the back end occasionally kicking out makes it a thrill to drive. The Older Mavs/Terranos never had really great brakes.
The problem I have, I think is with the Tyres, these are Cooper Discoverer AST II 235 75 R15 Rears probably down to just under 3mm now. They are not that good in the wet. Skid starts a speciality.
I am looking for some good tyres with good manners in the wet, combined with snow and the odd dirt track, does anyone know which tyres are best, the Cooper Discovers are in the order of £50 last ones were from Formula 4x4 at Stone Staffs.

Hi Rustic, Once I have sorted the noise out, then I may do the discs, how much did they cost, if you dont mind me asking. Did you get them from carpartsdirect? I have Pirellis on mine A/T's seem OK, there again, haven't really thrown the motor about, can't drive it like the Probe. Must admit dont miss the Probe that much, the Terra is a new driving experience which I enjoy or will do when the noise has gone :roll:

Hi I bought them from Carparts direct, £133.62 + VAT May 05
They wern't cheap !!!!
I fitted them myself, took my time, set them up as per CD manual, I used a spring balance to adjust the preload on the bearings.
Cleaned the bearings out, hubs, I timed the whole operation and it took nearly 3 hours per side in a warm dry garage...
What I did find is that during a routine service by Nissan, they sheared off one of the bolts on the locking hubs, I think they overtightened it to the point it started to shear...and left it..... But the remainder of the bolt came out and I fitted a new one. The only special tool I bought was a 1/2" drive hex allen key for these bolts so I could use a torque wrench.

As I recall getting the snap ring on the end of the drive shaft was a close to swearing event.... Try to ensure that the drive shaft doesn't move inwards when you re-fit the hub bearing etc.. It does pull back in with a "bit" of effort though... :lol: :lol:

Hi GoonerCarp, the discs on the Terrano/Maverick are in fact behind the hub, so it is a complete strip down, bearings the lot.. (My daughter's Fiesta brake discs are in fact held on with the wheel and wheel nuts, so is a 5 minute job once you have the wheel off.) The spring balance is used on a wheel stud at right angles, and the amount of force is measured before the hub starts to turn, you then tighten the bearing or slacken to suit. to get the right value, sounds complicated but very quick. Spare parts from a dealer only I think, however the snap rings are graded different thicknesses to suit the application / manufacturing tolerances etc. Mine went back in (eventually) no problem. I remember there was an earlier thread on this..If you do the job, check out the info on the Service CD prior to starting. The bearing adjustment is done by tightening a ring nut that is only held in place (to stop it turning) by a small posidrive screw. It is a great piece of precision engineering and gives very fine adjustment. It is very secure though.

Right n update!

Now seems (99%) that the annoying noise is coming from rear dif, sounds like a bearing. Had rear off ground spun wheels and unhealthy "rattle" can be heard in dif housing area. As this is out of my remit I will be taking it to local garage for estimate.

As you have been underneath you are probably sure where the noise is coming from but are you are sure it is from the diff, it could be closer to a particular wheel, as the wheel bearings can go, which then damages the seal and then you see oil on the inside of the wheel, it happened to mine at 60k. You can check the bearing play by moving each wheel up and down, there is normally no play.
If it appears from the central area, it could be a universal joint, (UJ's are fairly cheap) you can check the play in the joint by hand pressure,
You could try re-greasing the nipple on the UJ's to see if the noise changes.
OR you could undo the 4 bolts on the propshaft and try rotating the wheels again. Ensure that the prop shaft is supported as I am not sure if it could disconnect from the gearbox end as this is a sliding joint.
When I checked my front UJ there was a tiny bit of play in the sliding part...( the part that enters the gearbox) is this normal I guess it is?
Can anyone advise on this?
Obvious question... have you checked there is oil in the diff?

Exhaust Rattle.
Update on my Exhaust bracket on the gearbox, after re-welding the bracket, putting in the flattened copper pipe to take out the play in the joint.... It started to rattle/Squeak again....
I checked it out, and what was causing the rattle was the bracket was rubbing against a heatshield (forward of the bracket), welded to the exhaust from new. I removed the rubber mount part from the gearbox and slotted the screw holes, so that the bracket now is positioned 3mm further back. Problem now totally fixed. :smile: :smile: I hope !!!

Thanks for the info, having read and checked again, you could well be right. I was going to check oil level and add Molyslip. I will try this tonight, as there is an oil leak on the rear wheel end of the hub.

Bearing collapsed in gearbox, and the transfer box was shot! The gearbox man actually used another phrase which I repeated a number of times myself :roll:

In view of my outlay, he sorted my leaking rear hub out for gratis :smile:

Seriously could have done without the outlay, but just have to take it on the chin and keep fingers crossed that there are no more big outlays before going to Cornwall in the Terrano just before christmas for abit of r & r. Hi Jace,

It seems a bolt or such like thing had worked loose and rattled it's way around the transfer box, he couldn't work out if it was from within or if it had been left in there. The guy who had the vehicle before me never had the box opened so, possibly the previous owner before him, and just my luck that it decided to reek havoc whilst in my ownership!

If I get a chance I will give the gearbox man a call and ask if he can elaborate more, I will let you all know.

Ouch that hurt probably have to scrap mine if it failed like that more to fix than the car is worth, Glad you fixed it 8)

can use the workshops but 1.5 dollars per hour then theres getting it there & home again not worth the hassell
