Went to pick up the car last Sat morning from the garage and after forking out £467.05 it wouldn't start, just a loud "thunk". Got the mechanic out and he explained that the ignition barrel was also on it's way out and that i had to turn the key slowly. :nenau This was the cause of the starter motor sticking and burning out in the first place.
Sure enough it started, the bad news was the cost of a new barrel and lock set, around the £700 mark fitted.
To be fair the guy seemed to know a lot about Terrano's and he hadn't advised changing the barrel because he was trying to keep the cost down, he said i could look for a salvage part if i wanted.
It's been fine since and turning the key a bit slower than i used to isn't on my top 10 list of things that bug me so it shall stay as it is.
Thanks for the replies Guys.

HI, my car would only start if i turned the key slowly, it turned out to be the ignition switch. its just a small part the fits on the end of the barrel. it cost 37 pounds from nissan and it is an easy job, do a search on ignition switch various people have posted about this problem.

NED STOP!!

£700 to fix your ignition switch? Someones having a larf bigtime.

If you'd read the board you naughty boy there are shitloads of posts about this common-as-muck failure...the contacts on the backplate burn out and eventually it won't start.

You just need to replace the backplate which, as said, costs about £20. I can't remember the exact procedure but I did it so it isn't hard trust me....whip the steering wheel housing off and i thinks it a couple of wires and phillips screws from memory, but someone will have done it recently.

Its CHEAP and an UTTER PIECE OF PI55 Ned....
