Was on the way to my sisters on Saturday and had just got on the Motorway when the kids piped up "Whats that smell Dad".
I thought it was coming from elsewhere until i looked in my rear view mirror and saw a James Bond like smoke screen behind me.
I pulled onto the hard shoulder just as my ABS light came on and thought maybe the brakes had seized and were burning. No such luck
I popped open the bonnet to see flames licking up from the depths of the engine bay, i relayed this info to those inside and i've never seen them move so fast.:lol
A quick look and it seems the turbo intercooler bit has sprung an oil leak and dripped onto the manifold and set fire to the alternator which is down there?(thats my guess)
Luckily the flames died down quickly and we were back at home on a breakdown truck in less than an hour.(Not bad eh!)
It's been picked up again tonight and relayed to the garage for assessment.
I'm hoping that the damage is minimal, the dash lights up as normal when the key is in but it won't turn over and i have no radio or heater/fan controls.
Anyone ever had this misfortune? and if so what was the outcome?

Ned

nope , never had that problem , but im glad everyone is ok :thumb2..... cars can be replaced if neccesary , family cant

although i did see a woman once who had flames coming from her car on the a1 .... she pulled into a layby ....got out ...... AND LOCKED THE CAR !! .....who the flip is going to nick a burning car fgs ? :lol

good quick thinking there mate, glad your ok, must have been a bit heart-stopping that.

I reme, ber a few years ago driving home in slow traffic on a normal main road. there was this newish Vectra parked up on the opposite side of the road. Bloke hopped out quick, and at about the same time, smoke started pluming out of the engine area. odd. anyways, came back later on, and the car was BURNT OUT. can you believe that? it was pretty much a burnt shell on the side of the road, poor guy, but at least no one got hurt.

Garage just rang to say it wasn't the oil leak, the starter motor had burnt out and everything else seems OK.
The bad news is that a new one is £490 + vat from Nissan. They're ringing round to try and source a cheaper one.
A quick google search found some for £180 - £220 pound mark (OEM), what should i do?

What engine is that on?

Milners have them for the 3L at £240 so £180-220 sounds good I would go with one of those.

Sounds like it must have jammed on for it to have gone up in flames - no other damage?

Nedkelly hasn't said its a 3 litre its just I didn't find a 2.7 one on Milners site. The price e has is for an OEM one so will be more - on a fairly new vehicle (its a 2005) it may be worth spending the bit extra - final decision on that is his. Whats warranty on an OEM one?

this is a pic of his t2 downloaded from another thread .
so id say he has a 2.7tdi

Oh that's a shame those special starters for tin tent pullers are just soooo expensive aren't they, phft :augie
I'd get a really cheap one of fleabay :sly:naughty

PS :lol

Blimey! Where did that photo come from?
Don't remember putting that on or was it from i few years ago before i rejoined?
Car & Van both brand spanking new then (Before the credit crunch):lol
It's a 2.7 Tdi 2005 from MotorPoint Burnley.

Had a few sleeps since then. Sometimes i go upstairs for something then forget what it was when i get there.:nenau.
