Hate to be harsh but I will be surprised if they will allow him to join with his bumpers.

Not sure.... To join SE4x4R, I had to provide MOT, Driving licence, and proof my insurance covers me for volunteer response work. Car wise, we have to prove everything is safe, e.g., stuff is fixed down in the boot, towing eyes are up to the job, etc, but I guess if his car passes an MOT, then they can't really say no.

Personally, I would be more worried when you are parked up in the car park with 20 police officers, who have nothing to do for half an hour, than walk round the cars, taking the "P" out of all the fittings, and looking the cars over. In the past, they have pulled a few of the guys up for having things like flashing Red or White lights (Only Amber is legal), and tyres sticking out past the wheel arches, but luckily, they tend to just point it out, so you can sort it, rather than write out a ticket.

They were talking about this on the forum, and basically, most groups have realised that the future is not LandRover, and opening up their borders to the likes of "us"....:bow:lol

I have just looked on the Essex Rover Recovery site and to be a member you have to be a member of the Essex Landrover Club. However it does mention that not all Rescue members have L-R's and that some members do have "other 4x4's". :sly

I think I will apply and see how far I can get.

I bet they can still say no, Just because it passes a MOT does not make it legal to drive on the road.

All areas are a little different but we had our members look over each others vehicles (in not too much depth but mainly to see if suitable recovery points). Also to do NHS jobs in this area the vehicle had to be checked over by the council MOT place, my guess is they are stricter as I never had it done.

Also your last point is a very valid one too.

I cant imagine they will give any stick over bumpers, at the end of the day, its got an MOT and will get another with the bumpers on, dont forget my bumper has a winch in it now, and rear is not under such strick regulations.

We will see where it takes me. Being a good samaritan is good enough but would be nice to be in a group of rescuers. Me and the missus drove about when the bad flooding was about, we were driving down streets that were like rivers!

That's a very good idea..

Until the central body gets every thing into gear, all the rules are set by the individual groups, so what is a safety check for one group, will be done differently by another. The problem is, if you put too many checks in place, it just becomes too many hoops to jump through, and too costly to join, so future members will not bother. Even now it takes about 3 months from joining, to actually be able to do anything productive.

Our Group seems to work far closer to the police, than the council, and we have to be police vetted to do most of the search and rescue, or care worker manoeuvres, so they are working on the person rather than the car and really the MOT and driver licence are more for their own insurance cover than much else. Having said that, the Council are starting to join in more now, and for parts of the county that become cut off, they have specified exactly the type of vehicles and minimum level of equipment that can be used to drive the emergency routes across the marshes.

How does it effect your insurnace premiums being part of these groups.

In raynet we were warned about insurance so easy option for me is I dont use my car to marshall or transport anyone.

Never had an issue in the past as it's not for hire or reward. Admittedly it's now on the policy but there was no fee.
Alex, just sign up to your area and go with the flow. There are some big heads around who reckon landie is the only way but that's not your issue. Scrutineering your truck though is a bit more open to conjecture !
Sign up anyway and enjoy some good training that's worth loads of money and gives you great skills.

I only have one spare sest in my truck and it's never been an issue. What was more amusing though was trying to get an eighteen stone nurse into my bucket seats :lol I could see her shifting from one butt cheek to the other on the way to work but she never managed both :wasntme

I have now joined the Essex 4x4 response group (Essex Rover Response). :clap. It turned out to be fairly simple, and with only 37 current members spread all over Essex they seemed quite keen to have me.

However somewhere along the way I seem to have become a member of the Essex L-R Club. :augie I hope this is not going to be a problem with me staying on this forum.
