NEVER disconnect the battery lead from the battery with the engine running it will cause a voltage spike and will damage the alternator. The alternator has a diode that is designed to self destruct if this happens. The only way to test an alternator is with a voltmeter and an ammeter

Its very unusal for a rear one to go but at least they are stil availible unlike the front ones yours is just on the change over date if you have the ones in the thick rubber tubing on the fronts you have the older ones if its just a thin black cable you have the later ones.

why do you want the hose off? if your draining the system use the drain tap on the n/s of the rad

what year? do a search for abs sensors on this site it will tell you how to repair them as the earlier ones are no longer availible

I would get another loom its only a short one it goes back to a plug just behind the n/s/r lamp in the bumper

The cam lobes should be egg shaped if the lobe wears they go square at the top and the tappets knock as they slap down on the flat surface. when you adjust the tappets you set the tappets to the back of cam the oposite side to the lobe you cannot adjust the tappets to compensate for worn lobes...

Yes I think you may have a problem with your maffs sensor i would try disconnecting it and see if theres a difference

No its an engine out job you will need to fit new camshaft bearings as well

You cant do that on the tdi's as its a flyby wire system and the fueling is set by the ecu you could up the boost pressure but you would get very little gain. On the older vehicles pre 1996 with a mechanical fuel pump you can raise the boost pressure so that more air is delivered to the engine...

check your intercooler and pipes for leaks that would cause a whistle
