Hi guys, have been watching a series of videos on YouTube where a bloke converts a Merc Sprinter van int o a camper. Generally the bloke seems to of done a really good job and used some great ideas and managed to make interesting videos of his build.
However, today he has published a video of an electrical distribution panel that he has made. Obviously I don’t really care what he has done as it has nothing to do with me whatsoever.
Firstly in the video he mixed up a 240v mains socket cable and the 12v feed to the toilet cable. This was due to him using the same coloured flex to both mains and 12v systems.
Secondly his distribution panel is beautifully made and laced so neatly it’s almost a work of art. Problem that I see is that he has got 240v mains and 12v in the same box without any separation.

I would of thought there was some kind of regulations regarding the wiring, if not there should be. It may also be that this is an acceptable way of wiring the two different systems in a camper or caravan. Personally in my opinion the two systems are better in separate boxes or at the very least some kind of insulated dividers.

What’s everyone else’s opinion on this. As I said it has nothing to do with me at all just an observation.

Ah.. Not in a self build. You can do just as you. Like with 12v, 230v

Gas.. Also you. Can do as you like. Even use garden hose there isn't any one checking what's done.

Watched some of the video.

Batterys should be in a sealed locker, or at the very leaset vented outside.

Off to find the gas video if I can, must be worth a laugh I'm sure

Close but doesn't meet NCC motorhome recommendations, but being a self build it DOESN'T have to either .


It's. Great industry to work in. I have to meet or pass NCC guidance but a self builder can do anything

I fitted out my own Narrow boat but had to comply with all the regs as otherwise I could not get a boat safety cert, and without that no licence for the canals, is there not something similar for vans? our static van had a cert when we bought it, Rick

I have to admit that I keep expecting to be asked for a cert before I hook up to mains on a site, but to date no, Rick

Nope, is the simple answer.

Caravan... No requirement to even get serviced.

Motorhome / campervan.. Only minimum of mot after 3 years. No requirement to have habitation area serviced or. Checked.

Selfbuild.. Just mot if vehicle over 3 years. Its just a van with stuff in the back.

Selfbuild with V5 changed. Photos of bed cooker and table that's all DVLA reqest

Just shows the crap system we have, I as a refrigeration engineer can be fined for letting 134a escape to atmosphere, but as a plumber I can use the same gas to freeze a pipe no problem, Rick

Sorry Zippy I misread the original post, yes totally understand all motor vehicles used on uk roads need an MOT.
