Hi

I need to replace the water pump on my 2002 2.7tdi mav....However whilst searching the web for prices I find there are 2 different ones which look the same?? Looks like the viscous unit is a different size on both...... Also seems that 2002 was the year it all changed! Knowing my luck I will order the wrong one :nenau

The difference is a lot in £££'s (one is half the price of the other) and every blooming motor factor I call has a different theory/answer....HELP :confused::confused:

post a pic of the front of your motor..
also the inside showing the pump

Have you looked at Milners, and are you sure they are not confusing it with the 3 litre which is the old Patrol engine and very different? Not aware of a second type/size of water pump?

That 2.7 lump was the same til the T2 went end of life as far as I am aware and the 2000 and 2002 facelifts were only cosmetic (except for fixed hubs wich came in with the 2000 facelift) - especially the 2002 one which was basically bumpers, grille, stereo and a few fiddly bits...

Oh and change ALL your belts while you have it off the truck.

Thanks for that....

I will call Milners and ask. I see a lot of people use them on here.... I wasnt aware of 2 sorts either (workshop manual only shows 1 for the 2.7 tdi) but Didnt want to end up stuck tbh... It only just started to leak yesterday, very odd as it just ran out for a couple of minutes and then stopped !!! HAve topped up the water and rechecked it since and no loss :confused::confused:... however I am assuming it is the pump (as you can only just see in there with a torch) there was water running down the front of the engine block and then dripping out the bottom of the car. I cannot see anything else there (it was not the top/bottom hoses) that would cause that??? Happy to diy the problem just dont want to have issues with parts... looks like any other diesel lump in there (as per workshop manual) :nenau

Just off the phone to Milner ansd yes there are 2 sorts !!!! Apparently I need to measure across the viscous unit bolt hole to bolt hole.... lady says will likely be the 143mm one but need to measure to be sure :confused::confused:

Looks like a late night under the bonnet when I get home.... anyone know if you can remove the fan from the viscous unit WITHOUT taking out the radiator ???

well you live and learn - thats twice I've been wrong :lol.....wonder if they stuck a higher spec water pump on southern european versions...which of course would end up on parallel imports UK, of which there were lots.:nenau

Thanks for all the advice here..... took the thing apart on Tuesday night, found a local motor factors who had a pump and matched the fan to the thing and hoorah.... it is the 143mm one so bought it :clap.... Finished the job off yesterday afternoon. Did it with radiator in situ, a bit fiddly to refit the fan to the pump (not enough clearance with the radiator in place to get the pump/fan in) then just refitted all the bits and pieces, belts, fan housing, pipes etc... refilled and no leaks :thumbs:thumbs:thumbs... have driven to work today and all seems fine... another job well done !!!Now I just need to bleed the clutch as it is difficult to engage 1st gear when cold :(
