I just phoned Halfords and their Oil doesn't include any of the codes stated in my Handbook!

i.e. CC, MC, PD2, APi SG/CD, SH/CD, CCMC PD2,

So Mineral 15w40, Halfords do their own Brand for £18.99 is that any good?
The stuff at my local Country Store is £44!!!

I would expect an oil change ( you may have to buy 2 containers + genuine filter as cheap filters can be restrictive and cause lack of oil pressure ) with decent oil to cost in the region of £70

semi is fine as long as its Api Cg/4 rated

And use 15w40

Go to general traffic auto and just buy some 15w40 semi api Cg/4

Sorry to put a downer on things but the sums don't add up here.

7 litres of oil for under £30? It unimaginable how in the manufacturing process with the addition of the markup in distribution how this can be a very good quality oil.

Alot of cheap oils are used oil from recycling centres reprocessed and sold as base products. Alot of them carry contaminates and residual components from the mixture in what ever oils were tipped and mixed at the recycling centres.
Most cheap oils change their viscocity outside specification when warmed, others become more viscous at colder temperatures than they ought.

The lubrication properties quite often are not too much of a problem, the more serious issue arises where the oil comes into contact with the top piston / combustion chamber where temperatures reach over 300degrees - this is the acid test. Does it lubricate and the active dispersants ( cheap oils lack these ) take oil away from the site and back to the sump or does it burn up - cake and coke up the piston rings.... this tends to progress to the oil control ring which eventually starves the bore of oil.
Does cheap oil have corrosion inhibitors? ... most cheap oil doesn't

I'm afraid quality does come at a price

If you go to a Motor Factor this about right for that oil. These are " simple " engines that don't run on bullshite and prefer a regular change or you'll only get 300,000 miles or so out of them. David

When I worked for vw we used their own stuff that was cheap as chips, this was at a main dealer

I have just done a oil change for the same reason, CARLUBE 10w40 Turbo Diesel Semi-Synthetic (Specification: API CF/SL ACEA A3/B3 I use for my 3.0 TDI. seems to run fine NP.

My owners manual says fully synthetic - I don't like changing engines

Wrong oil should be mineral or semi which page of the manual says synthetic mine doesnt mention it.

I'd never run an old dirty diesel on fully synth, pointless. Any half decent oil will do in a 100k mile 4x4. Have u seen the state of it after it comes out ? It's probably pretty fooked after 2000 miles let alone 6000, regardless of whether ur spending £10 or £50 on ur 7 litres of oil
