Hi, I have a 2002 on a 52 plate Terrano, whilst on a smooth road the steering seems ok ish, but as soon as there is a rough surface the steering seems to wander suddenly which is a bit disconcerting to say the least.when you get to "tram lines" on the motorway it can get to be like a white knuckle ride. The car car has just passed an MOT about seven weeks ago. I noticed that there seems to be a small amount of free play at the steering wheel. SteveP

SteveP,
How much play have you got in the steering wheel, With wheels in a straight-ahead position, check steering wheel play, It is permissible to have up to 35mm play at the outer edge of the steering wheel.

Depends on what tyre size you are running, but it'll be on a sticker on the inside of the drivers door 8)

Hi,I will check the free play tomorrow, I am running standard size wheels and tyres and have the pressures set at 26 psi. it feefs like the front wheels have a mind of their own and even though i am holding the wheel in the straight a head position at the first rough road it wanders. thanks for the help so far it is appreciated

Ref : wandering steering

Hi,I had a look at the steering at the weekend and managed to rectify the problem. After reading one of the earlier posts, I think it was one penned by Mav.I checked the the anti-roll bushes that I had fitted some time ago,it appeared that they were not gripping the anti-roll bar properly. After removing them and cutting about an eighth of an inch off and refitting, problem resolved Best ten pounds I ever spent!
