Right guys, literally just got back from an 80 mile round trip with the girlfriend to Banbury to Upton House a National Trust property

On the way back I've noticed there was a noise developed on the Maverick, it is most noticeable about 50-60mph, it's like a humming/rumbling sound and at times I can feel what I can only describe as feedback through the wheel

It is present whilst in gear and also whilst coasting in neutral, I'm going to check auto hubs, brakes when I get home but I am wondering if it could be cause by a knackered CV joint, it appears I have not 1 but 2 inner boots that have ripped, they appear to be nice and greased inside though but I have just been off roading in Wales and it was very wet and sandy :s

Can you guys think of what it could be? Or think of anything I could do to confirm what it is?

Sorry if it all sounds a bit vague

in 2 wheel your front shafts should not be turning so will not be them, could be the start of a wheel bearing going, or pos rear prop U/J's, Rick

Rear prop UJ's were done in Oct/Nov I think so they will be ok, also had the drivers side wheel bearing done in the summer so unless its the passengers side I'd guess at something else, nice work so far though guys :)

Where did you go in wales?

Llangollen and Llandrillo, the coppers were bothering us all day!!!!! Reports of Anti Social behaviour on the lanes and residents were complaining

Had my tax and insurance checked 3 times

rumbling and feedback would suggest wheel bearing to me, good way to test cv joint is to pop it on full lock and do a nice slow circle, they tend to clunk if on way out(not the clunk from steering lock tho).

God I hope not, that's the only job I've ever messed up on the car that I had to get done by a garage lol

As rick has already pointed out, in 2wd they don't rotate so would the full lock trick still work?

Short answer, NO, Rick

Short answer, NO, Rick

I'm going to start with what I messed with last, drivers side brake caliper, then I'll check the auto hubs and if need be back the tension up on the bearings or tighten if need be, hopefully messing with them will make them change in sound confirming that to be the issue

maybe you have a hub engaged/sticking in locked position? have you tried it in a straight line in 4wd to see if noise gets louder/quieter?

Just a quick update, im driving home now and have noticed 2 things;

1. The noise dims under braking

2. The noise dims when steering left

I think it could be right hand caliper

or wheel bearing as braking would hold it true, and steering would take the bearing to a different force? try braking while turning? see if its different.

Warped disc or slightly seized caliper? Can you jack up and spin the wheel to check and compare against other wheel?

Discs are new and calipers have recently been replaced and slider pins attended to and copper greased :)

It turns out after braving outside in -1 temperatures that I have a kaput passengers side wheel bearing, I have tried adjusting but it has made no difference

Going to see if I can get one from the car spares this morning as it sounds baddddddddd like it's going to collapse any minute :doh

least it's a cheap fix, I had all sort running through my head lol, my drivers side was done last October so this one should be good for a while once I've done it :thumb2

I know it's a big ask, but are you going to take a few pics of the wheel bearing job as you do it.

I think mine might be going south on the near side wheel, but I have never done one before.

No problems if it is to much hassle though, and good luck with the fix!

Regards

Alan

I'll do a guide mate for the downloads section :thumb2

I did one on my drivers side and messed it up before but I was shown by the mechanic at work what I'd done wrong lol
