TYREs - again

hi chaps,

ok, I know I already did a tyre thread, but I just wanted to ask some silly questions before I go spending mroe money than I have. I am trying to decide between two Kingpin tyres. One set is 50.50 road/off road tyre, looks good, decent tread. The other is more 20/80, with big chunky grip. I am aware that the tyres greatly affect the drive etc, but what are we talkign here? Road noise? handling? are big chunky tyres less grippy on tarmac? how much of a decrease in fuel consumption are we talkignusing chunky ttyres on roads? The sort of use I will be doing is mostly on road for now, but it will turn into being used off road 2 or 3 times a month. I dont intend any major offroading at first whiel i practice and get used to it...can anyone advise me?

I'm not the best to comment, limited experience, but when I got my Terrano it had off road tyres on it (cheap ones I'm told) I put on some mixed use ones (cant remember the brand I think Falkens....cant see them from here)

Handling improved no end, noise reduced but didnt seem to affect the fuel consumption too much (though I suspect I'm wrong on that one :augie )

I had road tyres on mt T2 when I bought it Bridgestone Dullers & bind them with 5mm of tread after a month as the road holding was dreadfull:augiefitted a set of Falken AT's (50/50) & have never looked back as my braking & road holding inproved 80%had them on for almost 3 years now & they have worn down just over 1/2 way. Will be replacing them later this year due to I want to go upto 31's & i'm now doing more lanes which need MT's

I had to bargain for mine but I eventually got them £60 each at a local outlet. No idea if that's particularly good nationwide but it was at the time locally :thumb2

Theyre wearing pretty well too. I dont treat them delicately :lol

I've got very big VERY aggressive tyres probably a 90/10 split and on the nav (which was tail happy on road tyres) i have found them to actually grip better than the roadies dont get me wrong the road noise is megga but ive found the volume knob on the stereo soon sorts that out :naughty
I still get 300+ to 3/4 of a tank (i never let it go below 1/4) and once you start there aint no such thing as mild offroading

I paid that 3 years ago think they're around the £64 mark at alot of places now

hmmm...thats getting close to answering my question! looks to me like if i put say 80% off road 20% onroad i will only lose out in terms of road noise? steering will be ok, grip etc on tarmac? i ain tfussd about a bit of noise, but i dont want to lose too much in terms of fuel consumption!!

At 80/20 offroad./road you're into proper mud tyres, these will be noisy on the road, won't grip as well on the road especially in the wet and will increase fuel costs. If got tyres like this on mine and had on my previous one too - I don't use it everyday and so doesn't particularly worry me.

Also if you go up in size you will get less mpg too as you'll be overgearing the engine, you'll can find yourself using 4th on even slight hills on the motorway etc

Thing is to be realistic - just how much off roading are you likely to do. If its only green laning anyway then a decent AT tyre will be fine, if you're likely to go to Pay and Play sites then perhaps you need to think about something a bit more aggresive.

he's right but its not half as bad as that mine are 35's ... ok the gearing is not as much fun as standard, but if your carefull and not racing about
i think there are big fuel savings. pulling away isnt fast but its not that slow either, ask the rest of team wales mine aint slow pulling off and hills
in truth im only using 4th when i used to use 5th on really steep hills

you're right Col, at cruising speed you are probably running a bit more economically, in fact I can't remember if you ever told me what rpm you are doing at dead on 30 or 50 mph to compare with the standard setup. But you are definitely using more energy to get up to cruising speed so its a trade-off really.

One of the reasons I bought my Tunit was so that when I fit my 31-inch Kumhomes, the gearing will be more relaxed and any power issues taken care of by the extra 25 bhp and torque - oh and an accurate speedo for a change.

while we're on tyres, i bought one of those cheapy tyre inflators with digital readout and auto-cutoff from halfords yesterday....1/3rd off and £34 i recall....already used it but on the beemer....works a treat. Turns out I'd driven to work at 100mph (just joking occifer) with my one of my runflats flat, as in it had 0psi in it when i checked after the TPW light came on <gasp>....these runflats are worth their weight (but not their price!!!) But a handy little tool.

avoid kingpin, they are cases 'overmoulds' & dont last !! just false economy, go for a tyre like mentioned or Nexen, i got 50k miles + from those :thumbs

it all comes down to personal preference and the size of your wallet.
