HI.
Had a bit of a find the other day a 32cwt /1500kg Tifor hand winch came into the recycle shed.
Well I had to recycle it didnt I.
just need to make a new handle as I couldnt find the original.
spent half an hour looking for it.
And thanks to jonnathan m there is a how to use it .

Useful link Ian....I am looking at these things as I think they are a lot less hassle than the electric kind and much more versatile..

Bit of bugger carrying those trees around with you though Ian:naughty

Hi TOOLBOX I NEARLY CHOKED "LOL"
THESE THINGS LOOK TO BE A HANDY BIT OF KIT AS LONG AS YOU REMEMBER TO BRING A TREE WITH YOU .LOL.
I DONT KNOW IF THEY WILL WORK WITH A PLOUGH ,BUT I SHOULD THINK THEY WOULD.
THEY HAVE 3 SHEAR PINS AS A SAFTY DEVICE BUILT IN .
if you try to overload it they shear .two sets of spares are carried in the handle.

so no handle and no spares then.... still a bargain though

sorry guys the manual refers to the short pulling handle on the machine as the HANDLE . so YES I DO HAVE THE PINS.:clap
and a new handle just needs to be cut to length .
the original is teliscopic. so must guess what length of tube to use.
then fabricate a washer type of thing on the end that slips past a pin
due to a slot in said washer then you rotate handle so it cannot slip and smack you one when you arnt looking.

Ian, scaffold pipe makes a great handle, I used some foam lagging as a grip.

Remember they need specific Tirfor cable, not just bog standard winch cable, becuase the "clamps" in the winch would crush bog standard cable and weaken it.

While they do need some trees to be handy a lot of the time, the fact they are not mounted means they have 360 degree pulling capability, something a front mounted winch doesn't have unless you use lots of snatch blocks!

hi jonnathan m. thanks for the posted link YOU put up.
as you say must be used with proper cable ,fortunatly it came with one wrapped on its own keeper drum i have not unwound it yet but it looks in very good condition.
the whole lot came in a big wooden chest along with shackles and strops .so has been stored well .
i recon the handle would have been with it as well but fell out and was pushed into the stock pile .
have you still got yours?
do you know how long the handle should be extended?

you know those wheel braces yo can buy with telescopic handles? could you fabricate something out of one of those?

I once traced down a video on the net somewhere, an demo of someone recovering a LWB landie with a tirfor it was only the 600 or 800 kilo model and it wirked admirably! they were pulling it in a striaght line on the level though only through soft mud (but it was enough to stop the landy :lol) so a 1500 kilo one should be brilliant!

in fact let me be the first to offer you a tenner for it :thumbs

hi plank .
the jack handle idea is a good one not sure if it would be strong /long enough.
£10 THAT MUCH!:lol
Ive seen some videos on u tube of a tirfor in use ,also used them at pit when joining belts so i have some idea of the capabilitys.
also good thing about them instead of a bumper mounted electric winch
less weight so no need for uprated springs ,no insurance problems .
when laid flat doesnt take up much room in the truck.,

and easy to take from vehicle to vehicle! so if your out with a mate you can take it with you, and also use it for other stuff, much more versatile all round than a vehicle mounted electric winch! it would be my preference, so I can go to £12 :thumbs its a good offer :lol

Ian that was lucky, bid on 3 of ebay and been beat each time, even bid at ex-army auctions.JD

short vid of tirfor in use .i will let you add your own comments.

That video is just brilliant. It is the best laugh I have had at work in a long time...

What impressed me most is the cool, calm & collected way the guy acts when he gets his RR stuck on top of some road works and then gets the assembled and watching cap-heads to help him push it out.

Classic stuff and no mistake... please post more!

Alan
