The start of a problem?

Morning all,

Got into the T2 this morning to go to work, turned ignition key usual lights came on including glow plug light came on and went off in about 2-3 seconds (this is exactly the usual) but when I turned the key to fire up, nothing, no noises, no fire up, nothing at all.

So turn ignition back off again then straight back on, and she fired up but sounded quite sluggish, i.e. not the usual quick fire and off we go you get from it.

Could this be an issue with glow plugs or something?

Cant be the battery as I have had new terminals and new Varta battery when I brought it in December.

Any ideas? I am hoping she fires up when I come to leave work at 6pm :doh

yeah my thought too.

the contacts wear, you find that if turn key very slowly thru ignition stages
it fires, when normal quickness nothing.

easy if fiddly job with steering column cowl off.

switch is about £20, clips to bottom of key barrel.

did you get a click noise in the engine area when you tried to start?

Not that I recall, but will need to see if it happens again tonight and listen out for it.

Sounds like the classic ignition switch backplate problem - and even if it isn't, its a cheap first port of call.:thumb2

But check battery terminals as well just in case, especially the hidden bits under the rubber caps as the OEMs are pathetically flimsy and prone to breaking with very little effort.:thumb2:thumb2

does sound like ignition switch, that was what mine was like then within a month it was so intermittent I had to replace it. Easy and cheap job though.

Ok, so weird thing is, yesterday lunch time, fired up fine, last night, fired up up fine.

This morning exact de ja vu of yesterday morning. And to answer a previous question, no clicks in the engine area when turning the ignition.

Second time, fired up.

I just pulled an old switch apart to see what it is made off, well what a poxy design, my only thought now is how on earth do they last as long as they do, no easy way to sort it either, best bet new switch, Rick

if no click i'd say likely cause is the switch backplate, As it's a common fault. When my starter motor went there was still a click in the engine bay.

If you can get to a scrapyard you may get a working one (switch backplate). But how long it will last who knows. I took mine apart and couldn't get it back together, so popped to a garage up the road who had a terrano for spares and £2.50 lighter, sorted.

They are £30-40 new from nissan/ford.

Ok so my issue is still present (been getting by turning key slowly). Not had time to look at it yet, too busy with work.

BUT I think the issue is not as expected, last couple of days I have been gettnig in, turning key till glow light goes off etc then turning key slowly, I hear the click in the steering column and when I come to turn the ignition key I hear a click in the engine bay but NO fire.

I do it again a couple of times and eventually it will fire

Possibly starter or something?

no, i still think its the switch on the ignition, mine did exactly the same, click, no fire. the switch will be burning out now, when you fit a new one, take apart your old one, itll be all broken and burnt.

Hmm I am struggling to find the part I need then when searching for ignition switch backplate.

Could someone link me to what I should be looking for.

Also if someone could give me a rough guide on the steps I need to make to change it myself, gunna give it a crack.

damaged battery leads ? split in cable ? ........

If it was battery related or leads etc, wouldnt the engine at least attempt to chug over?

Last time I had issue with a battery (hense the replacement) the glow plugs didnt even fire up properly lol

is there a inline fuse in the battery leads , or a fusible link perhaps ? ..... i dunno ... its one option i spose ... just trying to help
