Hiya mate, battery is new-ish (4 months old) and the terminals are also pretty new, but I will check them anyways :)

pop the drivers side wheel off and clean the live and neg feeds to the starter motor, sounds more condensation on a connection to me if its doing it mornings only - free fix too .

its always worth having a clean up of connections as the seasons change, both mine have struggled with damp dirty connections

dont forget to disconnect the battery before you start though.

Hmm I am struggling to find the part I need then when searching for ignition switch backplate.

Could someone link me to what I should be looking for.

Also if someone could give me a rough guide on the steps I need to make to change it myself, gunna give it a crack.

I cant give you a link, but your options are a breaker yard, or direct with Nissan. its a cheap and tiny part. you could probably get one from a breaker today for cheap, and have it fitted within about 30 mins.

the steps I took are:

disconnect battery - check your central lockin, alarm etc

remove plastic cover around ignition barrel and underneath column.
locate ignition clamped to steering wheel
locate the rear switch and remove one (or two) tiny screws using either an angled screw driver, or small screw driver. this is the most awkward bit, but only take a few turns of the screw.

remove switch

insert new switch (for gods sake dont take it apart)

screw in

test.

******try this breaker "starts first turn of the key" tell him you want the whole ignition barrel so just unclamp it from the steering wheel. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1998-NISSAN-T...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item27bab615b1

p.s. as a guide on price, i paid about £12 for mine and it came with two keys.

Will changing the whole ignition and keys cause problems with my NATS and central locking?

I had that problem with my Peugeot Partner, starter solenoid went clunk, that was it.

OK get a voltmeter, one lead on to neural on battery, put other lead to starter motor solenoid, should show over 12 volts, gets someone to turn key

If voltage show a big drop it is the lead from the battery to the starter, corrosion at battery end most likely

Good luck
