Hi
I have Terrano 11 SE 2.7TD with intercooler. Changed MAF and airfilter about 2 months ago with fantastic effect.
Have another problem now. Engine malfunction light stays on. Lots of blue smoke when revved. When on road, seems to run with great resistance, like being retarded if thats the right word and doesn't like going up hills. I followed the download and found the fault code 36..... fuel shutoff solenoid 1 - malfunction. Should I believe this; if so is it something an amateur like me can do; if so where is it. Incidentaly I don't think that the fuel filter next to the MAF has not been changed in a long while.
I'd grateful for any advice; I need to go to north Wales on Monday and wonder if I can do it before then.

i would think the fuel stop solenoid will be protected for anti theft reasons changing your fuel filter has to be worthwhile if it hasnt been done for while!

Hi Phil,
I like you don’t think it is the fuel shut off solenoid, but it may be?
I would do the fuel filter and run some fuel additive through it, you should be able to get some you can put in to the fuel filter before fitting it.
Check the connections to the injection pump; it is the round one to the left when looking in to the engine bay and the oblong connection next to it.

Hi Toolbox I take it the plug is on the fuel pump itself :? i've oftern thought about cleaning the contact on mine would switch/contact cleaner be ok for this job or would I be better of using some thing else ?

Hello Sweety,

The plugs are on the end of a length of harness that comes directly out of the pump and they sit above and to the rear of the p steering pump looking right at you. As for cleaning them contact cleaner is ok.

Cheers Toolbox i'll give it a go when I get time you never know it may help the old girl a bit

Fault code 36 and difficult to run

Hello Jeremy (Toolbox)

Check the connections to the injection pump; it is the round one to the left when looking in to the engine bay and the oblong connection next to it.

I did this. It was a blue connector with only one 'pin' in it. It was clogged almost solid with stuff that looked like gelled vaseline. I poked it all as clean as I could with a small screwdriver and tissue.
The fault light went out straight away on starting and the green beast is running well again.

I'll still change the fuel filter and use additive later today. Will also get some switch cleaner and do the connector properly.

Thanks a lot; very grateful; can go to Wales now! Once again this amazing site has saved me money; but I think, more importantly, it's about saving time and raising the self confidence of us amateurs. Again, thanks.
