fires first turn but misses and stutters badly, and smokes its bag off grey smoke when revved until fully warm. I'm at my wits end with this piece of shit, It drives great when warm (apart from the random power loss, also the blue smoke when warm on boost)

The engine is sweet, pulls like a train, quiet, just all these issues, but the starting issue is probably the most pressing, i would say headgasket but it fires first flick, so no hydraulicing

I seriously wish i'd bought a toyota

what fuel are you using. i had similar problems running on svo until i started putting £10 of dino in each tank now runs sweet

Might be air getting in to the fuel line, have you had a new fuel filter recently?

It seems all these issues have a common route, the air in the fuel one could be it :thumb2

i seem to remember quite a few members had issues with filters not sealing properly , cant remember what make or type tho

as for headgasket , take the top off the expansion tank and use a torch to check for tiny little bubbles ...... its easy and free to do ...... also eliminates one potential problem :thumb2

or ...... get it on a trailer and take it down to rick and swifty ...... they will suss it out :thumb2

Have you checked that there is power getting to the glowplugs

It's had a new fuel filter yesterday, same as ever

Not checked power to glow plugs as not got test lamp or multimeter

Will do tho

I could probably just undo the feed wire and see if I get a spark by touching the glow plug

I'll do that

NO too risky, get a 12 volt bulb or a multimeter, and place one wire on the bus bar, through the bulb or multimeter set on say the 20 volt DC range, and the other wire to earth.

Switch on the "ignition" and watch.

Have you pumped the fuel filter primer before you try to start it and is it solid. Also drain off bottom of filter to check for water. Don't think its glow plugs as these will start ok without at this time of year. David.

p.s. please don't use the "Toyota" word children may be reading this.

ok, just started it for first time from properly cold since fitting glow plugs yesterday, it fires first flick of key and idles sweet, no smoke to speak of, it only misses when reved and thats when it plumes grey smoke too, it takes about 30 seconds of good blips and reving to clear, before it stops missing

I think this must be a fuel problem, air in system causing starvation, but all the smoke is unburnt fuel surely, so perhaps a dribbling injector ...

I'm thinking I'm going to have to get this to a specialist as i'm trying to find a needle in a hay stack with these issues

It sounds like air is getting in!!

Check - fuel lines from the tank underneath all along the underside of the vehicle, then check your fuel filter canister seals, then check your fuel lines to the pump and the seal at the banjo filter.

It is possible your fuel pump has a leaking seal allowing air into it - check everything else first.

I'm adamant this is a dribbling injector problem. the grey smoke on startup, plumes and plumes of it for 2 mins until it gets warm, and lots of black smoke once upto temp means excess fuel to me. I think my first real shot at it is gonna be getting the injectors serviced.

there was power to glowplugs and the air into fuel would surely give me a constant lack of power problem

Ok still not sorted

Still over fuelling, loads of black smoke. Also loss of power, will not rev about 2k from idle, flick key off/on instant reset

Replaced crank sensor
Removed mini filter
Replaced maf
Had injectors serviced
Fuel filter twice
Checked tank, sender gauze etc

What next ?
