Guys

Was on an away day today at work in Rugeley and after we had finished we took a trip to the local pub for a few drinks on the boss :)

Finished in the pub jump in the Mav about to drop a few people home and when I turn the key, all I'm greeted with is a loud click from the engine bay and the lights and stereo go off until the key is released back into the normal position :(

I reckon the click is coming from the Solenoid on the starter motor but can't be sure, I've attached a video so you guys can give me your diagnosis :(, I've got loads planned for the weekend too and now it looks like i'm going to be sorting this out!!!!

Is there anything easy I can try before replacing the starter?

O and I managed to get home in the end, managed to drag 7 burly guys out of the pub to bump start me, thank god I didn't stall on the way home lol

Here's the vid

Thanks in advance guys

1st off I'd be looking at a poor earth connection or poor battery condition. if it was just the starter everything else might dim a bit but not cut out like that. Go check your wires , battery end first then body mounts/earths.
Then report back :thumbs

:) Your always there for me mate :), where will I find the body earths and engine earth?

Just follow the cables back from the battery. Then there are black wires all over the place from body to engine, seek and destroy :sly

You've got some interesting pictures in you're photobucket  I didn't know you done shooting..

Mine behaved exactly the same. Changed the starter motor and its fine now.

id be inclined to think solenoid too - ignition on, call for power, solenoid is cack, release key, power returns to lights...

check the main positive feed down the the starter and as Makeit says, the engine earths drivers side of engine in particular...!

Banshee mine did exactly the same thing last night although started in the end, but my starter is new so think my problem maybe ignition switch! If it happens again or if still not starting try wiggling key as you turn ignition, if it starts then more than likely thats gonna be the problem!!
Rich..

please check the poss and neg clamps on the battery as they look ok but r not mine would start for a few days then like u say everything goes when i wiggled the pos clamp and tryed to start it would be ok for another 3 to 4 days in end got fed up replaced clamps with quick release 1s and all has been fine since hope that might help

And we have a winner!!!!!!

I checked under the red cap that covers the battery terminals as I have never needed to look under there before and it looks as if the previous owner has f****d the connector and had just taped it back on with duck tape!!!

I've fixed it temporarily again with some insulation tape as shown below and will be off to the scrap yard in the morning for another one, failing that I may see if Ford stock them or maybe one from the bay of e

Tell me about it!!!! I hate finding other peoples shoddy work!!!

yeah he's right, i struggled to get a clamp that actually fitted the wire, but a proper tractor one is spot on! I have got a more heavy duty clamp on mine, just a smidge bigger i think.

I might look at that tbh ah some of the wires have started to fray on my + lead, I already replaced the entire - wires as they were past it

Could you provide me a link so I know what I'm looking for?
