Hi everyone, been busy over the past few months and usual reliability of the old T2 means I've not been on here for a bit. Like a teenage son, I'm back in touch because I want something!

Jumped in the T2 yesterday and everything was as normal until I tried to start her. Glow plugs light came on, went off, etc.. Tuned key to the start pos. and all I get is a loud clunk from the engine bay which I assume is the starter solenoid. No attempt by the motor to spin.

So, it's dark, cold and damp every day and I don't want to spend more time under/over the beast to see what the problem is than I have to. What would be the best things to try first to suss out what the actual issue is? My battery is good and the day before she started as happily as can be.

I'm presuming trying to create a solid earth for the starter using a jump lead initially would be a good idea as I know earths can be problematic. what else should I check before getting a replacement starter, and any suggestions where to get one?

Cheers,

Craig.

Earth or positive leads could be damaged or loose.

Starter motors on these trucks are known for just failing, Could be starter has broke. Try giving it a tap with something metal while someone tries to start it.

Ok Banshee, I'll bang it twice :D

Hoping it's a lead issue as I don't really want to get into undoing that infamous top bolt! Especially as its stationary with the drivers side to the traffic.

And the prize goes to Fez (virtual prize, sorry mate!) - bothered to check connections this morning as I had 15 minutes spare and low and behold the live feed was indeed a bit lose. Quick tighten up and she lives again!

Now, I need to clean her up ready for sale as I'm moving on to a new truck very soon. Anyone interested in a 2001 blue T2 2.7TDi, 6mths MoT and four new tyres.

I'd have always gone in with the pessimistic approach that the world hated me etc etc and that the worst case was the starter was dead, check of the terminals is text book, first thing I'd have done, my mistake was assuming you'd already checked that :thumbs

I've also had the dreaded start click when a battery terminal has been loose in the past too, so the hammer is really last resort unless you are going for the full Basil Fawlty look :lol

Is the blue 2001 a LWB?

Yeah, I didn't have time when it failed as I was already running late for work. I'd assumed that the lose connections would be at the starter end and didn't want to get the work clothing mucky trying to access it. Stupidly didn't think about the other end!

Yep, 'tis indeed a LWB, 123,000 ish on the clock and when washed she looks quite shiny.

Yeah I have that problem every day :lol

I had to bin an expensive next shirt the other day as I was measuring something and ended getting Waxoyl on the cuff and it wont come out :doh

Ah, my mate is on the lookout for a Blue SWB :p

Well, as long as he doesn't look behind him, the LWB is just the same really :D
