Ok thanks mate, i'll probably be buying off of ebay so will have to rely on breakers descriptions, any idea what years i'm looking at or is it easy enough to tell the different brakes sizes from pictures or is there only an inch difference or something, i will also have to study pictures to get used to abs and non abs axles etc.

Easy enough, cover plate on diff and ABS, Rick

So the stronger front diff one if its got ABS then it should have the larger brakes as well?
There's a couple of front diff ABS axles on ebay but ones for an auto so that's no good is it?

Yeah sorry i meant the one without the rear cover plate, so far the stronger ones with ABS all seem to be autos.

I cannot remember the ratios tween manual and auto or even 2.7 and 3, but I doubt you will notice the difference tween any of them as the difference is small, I have had guys buy from me petrol diffs for 2,7's but were disappointed as difference was hardly noticeable, Rick

There is quite a few auto stronger axles on there with ABS but not sure what brake sizes unless all ABS axles have the larger brakes? i expect you're right about ratios, he'll be using it to tow his car trailer, when/if he gets his other one back, the pump is apparently off now and getting sent away tomorrow even though we know its the ecu i'll have to make sure the diff oils get changed, any idea what oils needed for the front diffs please?

How long does it take to swap axles if all goes well?

Have you got any axles for sale?

I found the rear axle easier to replace than the front diff. Managed them both by myself but I had a 2 post lift to help.
I'd suggest a clear day to swap an axle. There'll be a stubborn bolt or 2 needing assistance, as always, and replacement of the copper brake lines.
I used EP80W-90-GL5 in the 3ltr font diff and LS80W-90-GL5 for the rear axle on both 3ltr and 2.7.

You could be right saying the larger rear brake has abs. Might be worth looking for a complete truck to break.

Thanks Ian,

It'll have to be done on the road outside his house, he's going to get a quote from a pro first and if too bad i may have to have a go, i've just bought a decent jack and some 6 ton axle stands so raising it to 500mm will give a bit of room, maybe some heat, penetrating oil and lots of cursing could be the order of the day,
Has both the 2.7 and 3.0 rear axles got an LSD?
I think his Mrs might go mad if he gets another one, his daily 3.0 keeper has been at the menders for 6-8 weeks trying to remove the derv pump ecu :( and he bought this one recently because he needed another tow vehicle and it broke down on the way home! he's not been very happy lately.

I believe all later Terranos have lsd
Sounds like the easiest way to go would be swap the axles over. You may be able to just swap the guts of the diffs :nenau

You can only swap the front mounted diffs, the ones with the cover plate need special tools and you would need to swap the pinion as well, Rick

Well thats answered that. Swap the complete axle:thumb2

Yep, just need to find a good one and get someone to fit it,

The pumps finally off the other one now so needs to be sent away for repairs
