Yes on your post 49 both are OK but the Comma is a well known brand and a good price the other one at half the price is questionable, but before he goes any further he MUST do the oil, I bet he will be pleasantly surprised, Rick

Nice one Rick, thanks mate. any idea how much i need, what tools i need and is there a drain hole at the bottom and filler at the side please?

Half inch socket drive is all you need, they do get tight so poss a breaker bar may be good, if really tight some heat does wonders, they are a half inch BSP taper thread, and for the later diff with the cover plate about 3 Lts, Rick

Well apparently the diff has locked up so if this works it will be excellent for him, i'll get him to change the oil again in a few hundred miles to clean it all out,

How does he know it has locked up, not easy to prove, waste of time jacking it up to test, when the oil is bad they make horrible graunching sound like it has broken up, change the oil and good as gold, Rick

On the way back from buying it it started making loads of noise, then 50 odd miles from home it felt like it had lost power so he pulled over, it was still running fine so he got back in and tried to pull away put it wouldn't move forward and when he tried to reverse it made a banging noise and wouldn't reverse either, the police towed him off the motorway and the wheels moved freely but when they tried to get it off the recovery truck they had loads of trouble getting it off, the mechanic looked at it today, put it in gear and tried to pull away but it nearly stalled and wouldn't move and from that he diagnosed the diff had locked, apologies for the lenghty explanation.

OK it is known to be a weak diff, pull the cover plate off and have a look is best way, if it is goosed then as said before as it is built into the axle casing, a replacement axle is required as not practical to replace the innards without specialist equipment, Rick

It sounds more like its knackered than an oil issue then Rick? if it looks ok can i just use some sealant or does it need a new gasket, what am i looking for, worn/broken teeth discolouration etc?

Haha nice one, i'll try and get a look tomorrow and take some pictures just in case, thanks very much for the help mate,

It won't hurt it if i spray some brake cleaner in there if it just looks dirty will it? i'll make sure the drain and filler plugs are loose first and if it looks ok i'll drain the oil and give it a clean and then reassemble and refill with oil.

Looks like it’s buggered, there was about two desert spoons of something resembling damp marmite but smelling far worse in the bottom of the diff housing/axle and about five small pieces of metal approx 3mm square, obviously the oils not been changed in a long while, my mate wants me to put the cover back on and try it with new oil but I said from what i've learnt on here I don’t think it’s worth it so i'll see if i can find a replacement and if not he might have to sell it as it is.

You'll be lucky to find a good 2nd and newer type axle. But there are the older type. It'll bolt straight in but make sure you get the larger, rear brake axle with ABS sensors fitted. The early, early axles had a smaller rear brake setup. :thumb2

Thanks mate, that may be the way he has to go unless he decides to sell it, i believe you also have to fit the 2.7 front diff as well, anything to look out for with that? if its easy enough to fit i might be able to do that one and let a pro or someone on here that fancies doing the rear one.

I would not worry about changing the front diff if the ratios are different, the difference is only very small and you should only be in 4 wheel when on slippy stuff anyway, and if you do 4 wheel on tarmac you will get wind up regardless of ratio's, so do not do it, Rick

That's handy to know cheers Rick, so has the later larger braked, abs 2.7 rear axle got the cover at the back like his 3.0 and would need the axle changing again if diff is knackered or is it the one where you can just change the diff? i've just looked at one still fitted to an 03 2.7 on ebay and its got the cover at the back.

And it needs to be for a manual?

The stronger diff is the one that bolts in from the front, but not many years had the bigger brakes and more important ABS, so if you can find one of these great, more common are the lighter diff with the cover plate, but although not as strong does not mean that it will be bad, Rick

Ok thanks mate, i'll probably be buying off of ebay so will have to rely on breakers descriptions, any idea what years i'm looking at or is it easy enough to tell the different brakes sizes from pictures or is there only an inch difference or something, i will also have to study pictures to get used to abs and non abs axles etc.
