The spill valve is part of the pump and is controlled by the ecu on top, That service is for testing the ecu only so you want someone who can run the pump up on a test bed and not just plug in the ecu. Give these guys a ring http://www.ribblevalleydiesels.co.uk tell them its a vp44 from a terrano zd30 and explain the spill valve fault bob will know what to do right away they're good lads.

Glad to help :) Ill ask the question tommorow at work if we might be able to help.

Your a star mate, any idea if its an expensive repair, the link he sent my mate was from a company in the Netherlands, i'm not sure if he was thinking of sending it there or not though.

Not sure on price it all depends on what it needs, It doesnt need to go abroad plenty of places in the UK and cheaper.

Hopefully he can get the mechanic to do the tests you suggested to rule out any other issues although i think he's already made a start removing it, i'll speak to my mate in the morning to see what's what, you've given some top advice, thanks Luke.

Apparently its the pumps ecu, so waiting for it to be removed and then got to decide where to take it, probably ecutesting, £250 inc a lifetime warranty, seems a lot of cash but not sure what they have to do to it.

Edit

Watched a few youtube videos on repairing the vp44's edc, mainy soldering in a new chip and wiring it up by the looks of it.

Will do, thank you all for the help and advice,

He's only got one day off this week and lots to do but will try and get a look at the rear end problem on the other one, it would be a right bonus if its wheel bearing, brake lining or diff oil related, if its not then sadly i'll be asking for more help and advice, does anyone know if there is a how to on changing the rear diff on the site please?

Is this ok to use

Hi all,
Quick update, mechanic is having a nightmare removing the VP44's ecu in situ and said he needs to remove the pump, now he's snapped a bolt or something and has asked if it would be better to swap engines with the spares car! is it really that hard removing the pump, i watched a sped up video on youtube and it looks quite doable for someone with a bit of experience?
Thanks.

Pumps are easy enough to remove, but rusted/seized bolts are always a big problem, re swapping you first need to check if the pumps are the same ie Bosch or Zexel, Rick

Thanks Rick, he's asked if he can just swap engines not just the pump, is there much access around the pump area if a snapped bolt needs to be drilled out?

What do good secondhand pumps go for nowadays just out of interest?

Thanks.

you can only swap engines if the pumps are the same, as the ECU and loom are pump specific, Rick

Ah i see, seems a bit drastic for the mechanic to ask this though doesn't it, i know he's pissed off with it now, whatever he's damaged it seems as though he thinks its easier to change the engine rather than repair it.

Doesnt sound like a good mechanic in all fairness, Maybe speak to someone who has a bit more understanding of diesels. The full pump has to come out you can just take the ecu off the pump in situ.

Thanks Luke, its looking that way, he's a HGV fitter, he does all the lorries where my mate works, its turning into a bit of a nightmare for him now.

Had someone come out today, they reckon it’s definitely the rear diff on the silver one so if anyone’s got a decent one they don’t need let me know please.

I did tell him to do that but he hasn't yet am on the phone to him now, are any of those links i put up the right stuff Rick?
