I am guessing that the battery is being overcharged by the alternator as now and then there is a strong smell of rotten eggs in the cabin of my Terrano. Is the voltage regulator an integrated part of the alternator or fitted somewhere in the engine bay...........it's a Bosch alternator 70amp.And does anyone know what amps the alternator should pass when the engine is at idle with no electrical items on.
My revs have been low at 650rpm too and I am sure this has something to do with the alternator overcharging .Finger crossed.

Cheers
Dave

Pretty sure it's part of the alternator.

Never mind the amps what about the voltage? should be a little over 14v when engine is running.

Jim

Mine had the same problem because the battery was old. I put another batty in it and the smell had gone. Hope this helps

stick your old cabin filter back in, it'll block the smell.

I had a similar smell, but it wasn't the battery, it was the screen wash water.
I had used different makes and there had been a reaction over time.

The regulator is part of the alternator, a fully charged battery will read between 14.4 and 14.8 volts, depending on alternator type and make, (a properly fully charged battery should be between 14.8 and 15.2 volts but this largely depends on the antimony content of the lead), the amps is down to how flat the battery is, if it is flat enough to need a jump start then 60 odd amps charge will be seen for a while, as it nears 13 odd volts the amps will be around 15 or so, 14 volts and amps will be 2 or so, I must stress this is into the battery, draw on the alternator will be more in order to run all the electrical stuff on the motor, Rick

good point and an easy fix! might not be that but it costs nothing to find out!

Fresh Air Spray :augie

Battery...
Radiator...
Washer Bottle...
Carpet in foot-well due to blocked sunroof pipes...

Can all leave a musky / stale smell...

Hope this helps :nenau

Thanks all
I did have to put about 1ltr of battery water in a couple of weeks back as it wasn't even covering any of the plates when I looked(god knows how long it had been like it so the damage could already have been possibly done )
I will replace the battery with a known good one and see how we go on then if the smell is still there then it's alternator time.

Better to test with a volt meter first, if you get more than 15 volts (car alternators typically under charge cos the battery is only there to start the motor nothing more so complete charging is deemed unneccessary) then the regulator has gone and will cook any battery, Rick

rotten eggs that will be hydrogen sulphide

Is it defenitely battery related?

I associate that smell with a cold catalytic convertor ?

rotten eggs smell is sulphur ..... either from a cat . or from a battery ( sulphuric acid )

I'm sure there are other forums more suited to your requirements! Please see recent 'Porn' comments:eek: Younger members still have access to the site!! And there was no warning!!!:(

Right I have changed the battery tonight and thought I would just give the washer bottle a sniff and by god it stinks and I seriously reckon the smell was coming from there as it absolutely foul and virtually identical to what I am getting in the cab .So close to the battery too where I thought it was coming from.Thing is ,why do I smell it just now and then ?? Perhaps it could be when I bump over the road a bit more than normal and it swishes about more.
I emptied it and refilled with fresh water ,then emptied and refilled again.
My old battery and alternator might be OK after all..........will see over the coming days..fingers crossed as it's a good size battery.
