Hi all, just got another Terrano (maverick) I haven't collected it yet, but I thought I'd ask about a problem sooner rather than later. The seller says its sluggish when cold, anything spring to mind ?

hi mate some more info would be helpfull is it td or tdi:nenau

TDi. 1997 p reg. 145000 miles, no service history so I don't know if the plugs have ever been changed. I'm taking a litre of fuel system cleaner with me, can't do any harm can it.

this is it, could just need a damn good clean and thrashing!

Sluggish ALL the time

Bloody hell that was a long drive home ! Intermittent thick fog, blinding fog lights everywhere, and it won't top 70mph. Does the TDi have a throttle cable or is it electric ? Fingers crossed for a TPS with a cable I can adjust.....

Might be the Maf needs cleaning.

Sounds like it needs a good service, change all fluids. New filters, new glow plugs etc.
Spend £100+ on it to get it sorted..:thumb2

It's fly by wire mate :augie
Does the MIL come on ? even at start up?

forget tps and wires, its drive by wire. Take alook at the pedal, you will see the tps but I wouldnt adjust it if I were you. There is also a microswitch furthur down. Microswitch tells the ecu the pedal has moved, TPS obviously the position and the ecu sends the info off to the engine somewhere and makes it go, no cables I am afraid!!

As Rustic says, check the MAF first job, check the EGR for certain and blank off. Check the airfilter and fuel filter and as previously mentioned, those glow plugs!

i found with my tdi when i bought it driving back along motorway down hill and on flat could push 65mph but uphill went down to 40 50 ish i then remember when i was 3/4 way back bout the maf so i unpluged it and it went so much better so tryed to clean but wouldnt work so bought new 1 and it went fast again mine was a bosch maf so cheaper to buy a new 1 compared to the other type and i didnt have any mil light on just very slow hope that might help so just unplug maf and c if that helps:thumb2

i read in some motor trade mag that they might be looking at the egr valve and make sure its working (or blanked off) if fitted for the mot they r just thinking about it at the mo at the same time as lenghing the mot from 1 year to 2 years like in the eu:nenau

MAF will be my first suspect in the morning then.

cheers lads :thumbs

Bugger, it's a Hitachi MAF, is the testing procedure the same ? looking for power on terminal 2 and varying voltage on terminal 5 ?

HItachi maf, showing 0.3 volts average at terminal 3 engine on but not running. 1.2 volts average engine running at tickover. Didn;t test it at higher revs. I did disconnect it and it didn't make any difference to starting, tickover, or revving up the engine.
I was able to rev it up by reaching down the side of the engine and pulling on a lever attached to a cable ? Is this the accelerator/throttle cable ?
This is a 1997 2.7 TDi Maverick, I'm thinking as it's an early TDi it may have a normal throttle and not fly by wire ? Someone must know for definite ?

Just removed cleaned and retested the maf, getting better voltages now but that might just be because I used a better earth point. Up to 4.6v at max revs but it's still very slow and doesn't pull anything like my old one used to.
Air and fuel filter next .....

Just to add to the fun it's leaking water from somewhere under and behind the belts, and the rev counter doesn't work.

That'll be your water pump dripping then  You can try K seal for a reasonably quick fix, or get intouch with Felixthechopper he had one for sale last week:rolleyes:
Fuel filter and fuel pipes are favourite culprits . Fuel pipes over rear chassis corrode and let in air.
Did you check fault codes and is the engine management light actually working?

hello mate, hows life on the beach ?

the MIL light hasn't been on, how would I check it's working ? Does it light up with everything else when you put the ignition on ?

The beach is tops ta :D The MIL should come on at start sequence and then go out. Some less scrupulous sellers could be tempted to mess with it :augie
That said the ecu will store faults even though the light doesn't come on or the car go into limp mode.

if running when disconnected maf and nothing changes surely the maf is at fault?
