at school picking the kids up and the terra wouldnt start, there was a clicking/grinding noise coming from the starter selenoid area so we pushed it off and it started fine. well got home and on closer inspection the startermotor has sheared at the top bolt and has noved away from the engine!! any tips on removing it would be greatly appreciated as im going to have to see how bad it is, just hoping the gearbox is ok now:doh:doh.

Took my Dads out through the top of the engine couldnt get it out via the inner wing.Its tight but it does come out eventually.

Bugger of a job. Never done it with the engine in the car. The Manual says do it from underneath

is this a terrano starter is it the same as the maverick 96 plate if so got this tio a fine art through the off side wheel arch take wheel off peel back rubber divide and hey presto starte is there in front of you eject northward through the bonnet. rear bolt to bell housing area a bit of a bitch to get but with a few well chosen swear words it comes out..... good luck...

Had to go through the wheel arch to undo the bolts but lifted out through the engine bay. Tie string to the end of the starter as its easier to hold and lift out vertically. You may need to let some of the cable/pipe clamps go to give a bit more room.

looks like the top lug of the starter has broke, was the bottom bolt in and tight? but will mean a new starter unless you can get it welded and machined, Rick

Ryan found he had the same problem, and someone had bodged a bracket.
The motor eventually failed, but Ryan fitted a new one.

suprisingly it came out easily, i made room above it by undoing some of the wiring, the bottom bolt was missing totally! so i pulled it out the top

Yes, that's how I removed it also, dropped the new one in through the top too :thumb2

and ready to go back on. unfortunately the lower bolt has sheared some time ago, theres just a rusty bulge where there should be a hole so fingers crossed itl hold with one bolt, it obviously has for a while so il just have to keep an eye on it.

think you need a new one, i took mine out through the top of the engine, but i have small hands :augie

If you just used chemical metal and with one bolt I would not bother to put it back in, won't last 5 minutes, you may get it to last a bit longer if you fit a thick washer as large as possible over the lug, Rick

yep, iv put a large repair washer on there too. i dont realy have any other option, i need the car every day and theres no way to repair it with the engine in.

If there's enough room to get a welding rod or torch in, you could weld a nut to the bolt stump. The heat will help free it too. Sometimes it takes a few goes but usually you can get enough weld down the middle of the nut to grip the stud.

Oh and if you're struggling to get it to weld on, try just putting a blob of weld on the stud first, then sit the nut over and weld it.
