Clearly it needs 2 bolts, there is a huge turning torque, trying to rotate the starter motor and there will be a side force too.

I have used chemical metal for loads of things, but if it is aluminium, I don't rate it that well, ok as a filler or leak fix, but to take forces like this, no chance. The washer will help though.

Have a look at Ryan's bodged bracket, that a previous owner had made, it did work though...

Ryan, have you still got it, was it the top or the bottom?

best regards, Rustic.

iv used the search function but cant find anything on it?? is it still on here?

hmmm not sure that would work as my lower hole is sound its the bolt thats knackered, this bracket works by holding the bolt in place but i have no bolt.:(

As already said it will need to be tight because of the amount of torque involved for starting it and also it needs to have a nice tight contact with the block as that's how it makes it's earth

So is it simply in need of the correct bolt?????

You're probably already aware. If you don't repair it properly you run the risk of it moving out of the correct mesh and damaging the ring gear, not to mention if it falls out of position and shorts out that big battery cable.

what you really need to do is extract that broken bolt, yes it can be done with engine in, it needs an assessment first of its condition, it is in a blind hole so rusting of the exposed thread can be ruled out, the options are drill it, weld to it and tap it round with a hammer and sharp chisel, any of these can work, it never ceases to surprise me how many times just a tap with a chisel works, if it looks to be really stubborn then hold a nut over it and weld the bolt to the nut, do not forget if it is tight to "work it" this means small movements back and forth gaining a little each time, but to be honest it should fall out, Rick

the bolt has sheared off level so theres no way to put some grips on or put a chisel to it, i could try welding something to it to get leverage, iv done this before but there isnt enough room to get my hand in AND see, iv done it all by feel so far. so thats not realy an option either, iv had a word with a mate who owns a garage n he says he wont even attempt to weld it whilst the engine is in. iv currently got it located ok and bolted at the top, albeit with a repaired casting, im going to see if i can make up a big strap to hold it into position now its w.end and i have more time. fingers crossed

shame you are in Yorkshire, but if you want a drive down here I will get it out for nowt, no probs, Rick
