Guys

I've been offered a Patrol and I don't know whether I should pass it up or not.

It's a 1999 Blue/Silver 2.8TD LWB that's just spat it's crankshaft pulley and as a result the guy who is selling it has been told the engine is scrap. This in mind he's trying to get rid of it as he has a few other cars and can't justify the garage bills and isn't equipped to have a go himself.

The MOT history on it is squeaky clean and it's got thousands of pounds worth of invoices and receipts that it's had spent on it. Chassis and body are solid from what I've been told but will want to do my own inspection.

What's it worth guys? I'm considering another project :nenau

Here's some recent pictures of it

Looks very smart mate. I have no idea about prices as Patrols seem to hold a premium. What’s the condition of the engine? Is the truck worth breaking if too costly to repair?

I know you want a swb, but chances of one coming up that's good and not costing silly money is practically impossible.

Not sure what the mileage is on that, it looks really nice, but say 100k miles, I would say it would be worth about £3000 to £3500 in an all good, running condition.

However if all good and no engine, I would say about £1500

Funny thing is though, when mine went, one of the first thoughts I had was could a 2.7 Terrano engine go in. I looked it all up and could find no previous attempts at this and it appeared no-one did this. Must be for a reason I thought and paid no more attention.

I was just speaking to someone who deals in the 4wd trade, and he says this conversion is really popular in Spain/Portugal now. Really kicking off, bullet proof engines and with some tweeks getting very very good horsepower!

I still love the sound of the straight six though, that 2.8 with a few mods goes well and sounds amazing and the gearbox should be silky silky smooth.

Do it :naughty

Yeah 1500 sounds about right

Axles sell for 800-1000 a pair.

Yeh if it's as good as it looks in the pics I'd say it's worth a punt at the figures suggested bro as long as you're prepared to break it as a final option :nenau

You’ve hit the nail on the head, looks great but if all else fails break it even though it’ll be a pity the numbers have to add up.

I’d like to know just how much damage there is to the engine, might not be beyond repair which might make it a real bargain.

You asked so I'll indulge!!!

Here are the pictures that he sent me via e-mail of what the garage found accompanied by the following info via text;

  • pulley is ground away (4mm) around hole for shaft
  • one side of keyway (10mm) on crank missing
  • crank end looks square but a little damaged
  • new crank and liquid metal (keyway)

What do we reckon boys?

Patrol Value ?

Looking at it's mileage 165 K with a scrap crank etc I think its probably worth £500-600 at most if the body is sound and you sort it yourself at a cost of say £2-3K.

It is difficult to know if it is a none runner what the state of the other running gear is so I would work on the basis that the clutch & gearbox might not be perfect either.

A quick search revealed this vehicle below so there are vehicles with 106k on the clock for £5k

If it is just the crank that is damaged then it is not a great problem, crank can be repaired and pulley etc replaced, but what is not clear in the pic, is the cam belt bottom sprocket, has it moved on the worn key way and if so how much? if the valves have hit pistons then the engine would not be worth salvaging, Rick

Yeah if its done 165,000 i'd bring my valuation down for sure. 20k miles in the last year, bloody hell. looks like the rust has been done previously though which is good.

Went and had a look at the truck yesterday and had the chance to see underneath it without getting wet too as it was on an inspection ramp :thumb2

It's solid as a rock underneath and all the suspect places have been dealt with :thumbs As said, it's not the gem that you can see in the advert pics but there's no bumps or dents on it anywhere and with a good wash and polish I reckon it would come up a treat.

As for the engine, well this is the deciding factor. I either try and bodge repair the current one and try and utilise the 11 months MOT still left on it or, take it of the road, remove the 2.8 engine and replace with an OM606 and daily it keeping Terrance for special appearances :naughty

Can you guys link me to each and every resource you have been using for a potential OM606 conversion please.

Makeitfit, Barrbeast, MrK, Patrolman Steve, Fez, Solarman come on guys hit me

Edit - Macbethial has had some of experience with these engines hasn't he with his years with Merc?

Here's some snaps I took, it's a very very honest truck and it's only ever had genuine parts

Mercedes OM 606 engine

Edit - Macbethial has had some of experience with these engines hasn't he with his years with Merc?

Out of the six Mercs I have had I have not personally owned one with the 3 litre 24 valve unit. The engine comes from a great period of Mercs history - before accountants got involved. Engines from the 1984-2001 period were well over engineered. My 1989 Petrol 26E covered around 186k miles when I parted with it.

I have driven loads of vehicles powered by the 3 litre diesel unit both the earlier normally aspirated version and the later turbo versions. The engine is smooth and the later turbo version has loads of torque. Not earth shattering by modern standards but a good workhorse. At the time they did not have the sound proofing of later engines so are not particularly quiet.
That said I personally (even if I were 30 years younger) would not go for a transplant from another manufacturer due to the huge amount of work involved not to mention insurance factors & re-sale. I would look for a similar engine instead or fix what you have.

Zac please look at my post 12, this is the deciding factor re sorting your existing lump, if it is bad then source another 2.8, Rick

drop a cummins b45 in, yeah google it, there was a swb with one for sale recently.

C|ummins are way too heavy and need lots of landrover ish tweaking. Drop an OM06 in it . Straight 6 merc diesel 175 bhp out of the box and dirt cheap.
However, I'd just put a s/h engine in it and sell it.
Then get a shortie :D
