Rear Drivers Spring Rattling

What could cause this?

I can hear it rattling when driving under low revs and its really annoying, I've been under the car and gave them both a bash with a rubber mallet, the rear left is fine but the rear right thwangs really loud

It's not snapped and it seems to be sitting in the cup OK so what the hell's going on there then?

I'd also count the coils on the spring as it is possible to have broken the spring. The remaining spring could easily be in the cups after the fractured piece joined the big tarmac scrap yard :augie

check the cup aswell for any rot

Good point, I forgot they fail
Also there should be a spongy spring seat packer thingy, is that in place ?

The spring could be partly cracked but hasn't snapped off yet
