Or one has snapped. I had one break a couple of months ago and that rattled, couldn't see the break and it only rattled on acceleration. Found it eventually with a powerful torch, the top two turns had snapped off and wound themselves down but very difficult to see. ��
just noticed this, are you saying that you thump your spring side ways on and it makes the noise that you are trying to trace, if so I would be looking at the top spring mounts welded to the chassis, they do have a habit of rusting away, Rick

Just reading back through this and in your first post you say you have moved the springs into different positions.
The design of the top and bottom mounts only let's them sit in on position, also was this with weight on them or the chassis jacked up?
They seem to spin ever so slightly where they sit, this was with one front wheel up a bank and the opposide side rear articulating, the movement was very minor
