rear diff problem

just joined so hello all:clap

i need some help i have a diff problem on a ford maverick xlt i'm getting a whine noise at around 30mph and above i guess this is the bearings but how hard is it to change and are the diffs the same as the terrano
or has anyone got a used diff for sale or know anyone that might
i dont know to much about mavericks so any help will be good:bow

I'm not 100% but I think a XLT is a Mazda type later Maverick in which case jimmy92 hasn't got a diff for you (not unless he's breaking one of those too) and theres nothing in common with he Terrano I'm afraid.

On the plus side its not that difficult a job to do, not sure how the shafts go in/on to the diff on one of those but if they bolt onits really easy, if they go in then you may have to pop a ball joint or bush etc on each rear leg but still no biggy.

Does yours look like this

wow thanks for all the help and yes it looks like the one in the pic so is a mazda/ford type glad to know its not to hard to diy i checked the diff oil and it looks like baby puke creamy white also found a few metal bits on the plug i guess this is from the bearings? once again thanks to all for the help :clap

If it looks like that then its got water in - I should get the oil changed ASAP run it for a very short distance and then change it again. This probably won't save you from having to change the diff but may prolong its life a little - if its fully of emulsified oil you're living on borrowed time.

Don't worry too much about the grade of oil at this stage just any old gear oil for tnow but the correct stuff will be either 75w/90 or 80w/90 API GL5 at a guess, probably in your handbook if you have one.
