Few questions, uncouple, drive away, recouple, perform a reverse manouvre, then go out for 45 mins like a normal driving test :thumb2

How many minors did you get?

By that I mean how many little mistakes, not how many kids you ran over....you were all thinking it :lol

that's rubbish - sounds like you have to redo your driving test - just so happens your pulling a trailer... Money making exercise if you ask me!! Where the questions even related to the trailer?

Yeah they were, it's called "show me, tell me" I think they refer to it as. I had questions such as, "Where would you found the nose weight and MAM for the trailer" and "How would you check that the handbrake was correctly applied to the trailer after de-coupling" then there was one Car related question but can't remember what it was.

My instructor gave me two A4 sheets of questions that he said they'd ask me but neither of those were on there :lol

Yeah it was literally another driving test, as much as I'd like to agree that it is a money making exercise I can't. I had the exact same feeling when I started looking into what I could legally tow. But I think it's a good idea now to enforce newer drivers to pass a test, there's a lot of things my instructor taught me that I'd never have done and a lot of legality stuff he cleared up for me too on weights, extended mirrors etc etc. I went to the instructor with a yeah yeah yeah attitude at first as I'd already towed stuff before but he soon put me right and got rid of some bad habits for me which I'm grateful for :bow

The fact that some people I know passed so long ago and have admitted they would have no clue at all what they were doing with a trailer and have or would tow one scares the hell out of me  Maybe this is why is see so many idiot caravan drivers on the motorway doing stupid things, pulling into gaps not big enough for them and slamming brakes on because they forgot about the 2nd home they were pulling along behind them  we've all seen it and I'm not labelling ALL caravan drivers as bad drivers, and if you're on this forum you can't be anyway because you must have brain cells :naughty

All in I've worked out that I had 4 lessons in my own vehicle using an instructors trailer, booked 1h 30 mins before the test and then the test fee itself, and it all cost me £455 quid, which I know is a big outlay but I'll make that back I'm certain through what it will now enable me to do :naughty

No, don't get me wrong...maybe trailer tests are a good thing but how much of that stuff you got taught was common sense. I mean, its obvious that a car should only pull so much, etc. I suppose there is some technical things about braked/unbraked weights and notice a discussion in the thread about 'breakaway cables', i.e. they need to break!

Is the problem not just stupid drivers!! A test won't stop that.

Do you have a buzzer linkup when you put the indicator on? I found that a useful reminder the trailer was on!

What does drive me nuts is people pulling trailers at 70+mpg along the motorway. 60mph!!! :doh

Yeah true I suppose, I didn't really get the point did I when I removed the cable from my small camping trailer, having never really towed anything braked before I didn't get that the point of the breakaway was to pull the handbrake on and snap leaving the trailer to just halt to a stop (hopefully) :lol

That's why I've been doing so much posting of even the small stuff so people can point out my mistakes :thumbs

Yep buzzer is fitted, it's really piercing if there's nothing else in the rear of the car as I found on my test, it made the examiner wince at first :lol

I stitched the examiner up a kipper too :lol I knew it was going to be an issue with glare when we went out as it had been peeing it down and had stopped and switched to bright sun so I snook my highway code behind the passengers side visor, sure enough he opened it and it dropped on his lap :lol :lol

Wish I got 70mpg :(

:lol :lol

Correct breakaway!!!!

Thanks Richard, glad you piped up :thumb2

I don't know why but the recommendation is that when you attach the cable to your truck you pass it through something and clip it to itself, I've seen and heard that a lot :nenau

Oh and they definitely work, I forgot to unhook mine once and the brakes on the caravan were properly on :doh I have a nice new one now :D

Two Steps forward One Step backwards :(

I had a conversation at work today with the lad that from the estates department that was initially helping me with the trailer in the workshop at work. He had been tasked with sorting the brakes out and had told me that "they were good" over the phone, we had agreed that he would strip the hubs off and clean ou any debris, check the pads for wear, check the cables were free and not seized and adjust the brakes as neeeded.

I asked him to clarify what he had done today and to my annoyance he told me that he just put the handbrake on and he couldn't move it when he pushed it so he could tell the brakes were fine from that

I'm glad he's not helping me anymore, I don't need helpers like that, that thing loaded behind me loaded could kill me if worst come to worst because of a trailer defect and he can't legally tow it anyway.

So I've got more jobs to do now, but I aint a quitter so I cracked on tonight

Glad I've opened them up as they were all like this;

I've now removed the bearings which were all intact and working thankfully, cleaned them and re-greased them and re-fitted. Ive also copper greased the relevant bits.

I then adjusted the brakes and now they really stop the trailer :thumb2
