My Maverick petrol 2.4 seems reluctant to rev. Going uphill, it seems to run out of steam and will misfire a bit. It feels like a fuel starvation issue rather than anything else. Any ideas?

It pulls fine with light throttle, but there's no go with the pedal mashed down. Well, it will go, but not as much as I'd expect. Also, in neutral, it will only rev to about 5500rpm with my foot right down. It'll rev higher with light throttle.

It has recently had new air filter, new plugs (the old ones were disgusting - I'm surprised it ran!) and the HT leads look ok. I've become aware after a search that there's another air filter in the plenum. I did undo the thumb screws when doing the service but it didn't seem to want to come apart, so I left it. Could this be the culprit or is there a fuel filter somewhere?

I did try unscrewing the fuel cap. There was certainly a good vacuum going on, as there was a rush of air as I undid it, but that didn't help cure the problem.

did u run the car with the filler cap off or just opened it and screwed it back on then started the car ad the breathe might be blocked.

Opened it and put it back. There's no way the tank would create a vacuum sufficient to affect fuel delivery instantly though.

No that's true there should be a fuel filter through either near the tank or in the fuel line to the engine not to sure bout petrol terrano as I have a diesel :thumbs

check fuel lines at rear drivers side wheel arch along the chassis, pipes could be letting air in which is a common area.

There is no filter in the plenum, just a wire mesh to stop objects going in, the fuel filter is an inline jobbie under the rear of the drivers door, there is no tank breather as such and the tank will normally pressurise, not vacuum, at full throttle the throttle position sensor will send signal to ECU, probably why it cuts the revs, Rustic or Ray ma know more about that, first off I would do the fuel filter, Rick

Oh nearly forgot, the high pressure fuel pump is in the tank, so no chance of sucking air, flow and return are under pressure, return only slight, Rick

Thanks Solarman. Given how neglected this truck seems to have been when it comes to servicing, the fuel filter is a decent bet. I've seen it while under the truck - that silver cannister I presume?

Got the new fuel filter fitted. Almost broke the holder trying to get the retaining bolt out. Suggests it'd been there a while...

Engine now pulls much more cleanly and can actually pull beyond 3000rpm on the road without misfiring!
