Yep the time has come, the Black Pearl is sold, the Patrol must live again :D
I promised the wife I'd not start another project till the Pearl was done, well it's near enough done :sly
The trouble is I left the old Trol ( nissan, not wife :lol ) for the last few years in the exact state I last drove it; covered in mud, full of old food wrappers and coffee cups , and that's the nice bit
The state of it is pretty awful I'm sorry to say. However the project I have in mind won't need a terrible lot of the original beastie.
I plan to make it into a pick up. Bob tail it, extend the wheel base a bit and stick a frothing at the mouth OM606 in it.
Purists best look away , the rest of you watch this space
Basics are the existing stock 4.2 is sold. I'm using some of the money to buy a mechanical pump for the OM606 , this alone will deliver enough fuel for 400 bhp . Add twin charging, super charger and big turbo, should be interesting:naughty
Suspension mods as much as I can do myself to get the most flex as reliable while running 37s.
Details will follow over the long winter nights rapidly approaching
Tonight though was the start and brace yourself chaps, the pics are horrific :(
The engine started up after two cycles of the glow plugs by the way :thumbs
On the lift and ready to strip , anyone want any spares ?

If you look closely you'll see lots of truck not there any more. Rust has run off with it
Fear not, I'll have it :augie

Started with about a litre of WD40 :lol it's coming appart though, bit by bit.
I'm going to be "trimming" the front a bit too so all this front panel will be out . Rad will be in the back .

Onwards :splif:

 Nice workshop.

Thankyou, but it's my son's really :thumbs I sub let a bit off him, much to his dismay :lol
Luckily we do get on like a house on fire , I help him a bit and he helps me a lot. It works for me anyway :naughty
Tonight I had a few more hours in the gym , wrestling nuts and bolts off the old
beast :whip:
More WD40 and some scaffold pole action eventually beat the buggers.
It'll take a while for this to look good  but hey TV is shite anyway :duno:
O/S inner wing area not as bad as I expected.

Onwards

:splif :splif: :splif: :splif: :splif :splif: :splif: :splif:

Sticking with the Mercedes theme it should be sitting on a pair of portal axles:sly

Sod the unimog stuff, bloody bonkers money
Anyway, for tonight I have been further investigating the shear factor of various size bolts
I have also shifted about one wheel barrow full of mud
Look what's in my box
Yep, those are stones, twigs and some beech leaves :lol
Horrah for filters I say :thumbs

Wings are off and the old thing's underskirts aren't as bad as I expected.
Winch tray put up a fight but most else is now submitting :)

Engine bay sadness

Does anyone know what this dip in the cross member is all about ?
Thinking maybe a nice route to take the winch line to an inboard winch :D

Onwards :homer

Had a short day at work today and so a long session on the Trol.
All ancillaries off and under tray removed. Gearbox cross member off and props undone.
We decided to go for it and take the engine and box out in one
To do that the slam panel had to go, so out with the spot weld drill :sly

That wasn't enough, and with the hoist on full extension we were up that creek again. Luckily some big mates turned up so they got to stand on the high end of the hoist :lol
Still not enough, so the big grinder came out and bye bye radiator cross member :augie

Safely out :wasntme and time to split the box. That was a doddle by the way :thumbs

Gorden Bennet that thing is heavy and physically massive. Just look at that gaping hole , it's like the Mersey tunnel :lol

Here's the old lump ready for the new owner :)

I'm keeping the gearbox and will be doing a service on that at some point.

Home for a rest now and consider where to start the body cuts
Onwards

Save that lot of twigs Pete!
Bloody good air dried tinder that is.;:thumb2

Nice work there

Great to see the pictures of the strip down process, reminded me of when I re-shelled a Mini back in the mid 1970's.

Strange things would not fit on the new shell like the wipers!

BLMC changed the spindle spacing part way through the Mk2 shells, they also changed the size of the rear screen at some stage !!

At least you have the right equipment and a decent ramp not like me with a body shell supported on four oil drums.lol

Come on Petey McPeteyPops, My Patrol is going to be on the road before yours!!!!!
