Silly bugger me posted that my T2 is not needing any tech help. And what happens? Yes, I know I should have kept quiet but at least I get a chance to avail of help from the clever people on here. What seems to be happening is, oil is getting on the bonnet insulation and is appearing on the top of the rad (both sides) and also the air filter casing and the large hose at the Turbo. See pics for info. I also have oil in front of the oil filter and the rear of the alternator. No recent oil change or service or meddling with it (until today). Any clever people with solutions out there?

No pics in the album it says Liam.

But given the widespread mess, have you checked your filler cap? They do give out and have to be replaced sometimes - I've had to do it before now.

Try a bit of PTFE plumbers tape round the thread if its showing any signs of leakage...

just thought, if its on your rad as well, its either being blown around by the fan or, if you have an oil cooler, that might be the source if its leaking? Its the only oily thing forward of the rad....

Ok, it says my pics are waiting moderator approval, so how long does that take and who can approve them?

Paul, the oil is only on the top of the rad at either end, definitely coming from the insulation but how it is getting on the insulation is a mystery. Also at the back of the alternator and the large rubber hose at the Turbo. The pics might explain it better than I can.

well i can see them ....:augie:augie:augie

its not widespread the bits on the rad look the problem the turbo hose looks normal to me

have you checked all your fluids are not leaking

power steering for example , are the blades of the fan oily

Hi Col
No oil on the fan blades, the underside is ok,no obvious leaks from power steering or anywhere else. Tried running it with the bonnet up but couldn't see any oil flying about. Thanks for sorting the pics.

on the bonnet sound proofing is that oily?

if it is where?

also what colour is the fluid on the rad

is it dirty like old engine oil or another colour

Bonnet soundproofing is oily, black like engine oil. It may be coming from around the Turbo area as the oil would naturally flow towards the front, explaining the oil on rad. Oil on the air filter cover is a little odd although it's possible it also comes from the Turbo too. Any ideas?

to be honest im clutching at straws

the turbo shouldnt be blowing oil anywhere. is it slower than normal lack of power... more noisy ?

what area of the bonnet soundproofing is oily

did you check the filler cap like i said?:augie

Yes Paul, on so tight I had to use a vise grip to open it. I think I'll have another look tomorrow and take some more pictures. It is still running the same as always,Colin,no noticeable loss of power and no heavier on fuel. So tomorrow more pics, power wash and a quick eyeball on anything that looks dodgy. Thanks for the help so far. By the way Colin, soundproofing seems to be most oily above the Turbo on both ends of the large hose, off work again tomorrow so I will have time to give it a good once over.

Changed the oil today, oil filter, fuel filter and the rear diff oil. Number one son insisted on filling the oil filter before putting it on, first time I'd heard of anyone doing that but as he did 99.9% of the work today, I let him do it his way, only fair I reckon. I also managed to solve the mystery rattle from the front nearside, turned out to be an old worn brake pad caught between the stone guard and the disc. This might be what was causing intermittent hub overheating.

always worth a try - if the seal leaks it doesn't matter how tight you get it, the thing still leaks, but if theres no trace of oil there it will be fine.

does sound like you might have left something loose, or theres some pressure being created somewhere....assume it was definitely the right oil filter?

and how does someone leave a gash brake pad hanging around! :lol:lol:lol

did you remove the oil breather from the air filter hose that could be it

too much oil when changing could blow out

oil spilt on chassis and run down towards the fan unlikely but worth looking

like you say pressure wash and keep an eye

but id guess your sound proofing is drowned now

You might just be a genius!! I have just remembered that I was to check my dipstick with one from another Terrano as I suspect mine is not original. I did top up with oil recently and if the dipstick is not original it is possible that I put in too much. Totally forgot about that, that's what happens when you get old. I'll also check the breather from the air filter but I suspect it is too much oil.

dont drive it then until your sure.... to much oil is worse than not enough

iether drain it and measure when you put it back it or get a dipstick before you drive it

i'll measure the length of mine tomorrow am and give you the measurement to compare

Sshh!!! People will start talking, I will measure mine as well and we can see who has the biggest one. Mine has a springy thing on the end and no min or max marks. I will take a pic and post it here.
