Hi all. i am a new member of this forum and this is my first post so please be gentle.

I have recently purchased a 55 plate swb terrano commercial 3.0 Di Turbo SE. It has done 80k so hasnt stood still but i would hope still has a fair bit of life in it.
First problem is the oil pressure light come on sometimes. If i start it straight away without waiting for the heater plug light to go out it generally doesnt come on but if i wait for the heater plug light to go out and then start it it stays on. If it comes on it stays on until i turn it off and restart imediately. I am hoping it is a sensor/electrical fault(Is this a common fault). I have bought a new sensor but am a little unsure of where it is fitted, have looked at the online manual but still cant really work it out. I am planning on oil and filters change this weekend is it wise to change the sensor while i am changing the oil or is it possible to do it at a later date without getting oil everywhere!!!

Also there is a shake coming through the steering wheel at approx 65mph+. Just had the front wheels re balanced but hasnt made much difference. Have recently replace the off side front anti roll bar link arm and couldnt see any obvious faults.

Any help would be gratefully recieved.

Hey another Jon - welcome!

Sorry, I can't answer your question cos I am the idiot the guide was written for, but I'm sure someone with the knowledge will be along soon. :thumbs

steering shake at 65mph is normally balancing.
now its not uncommon for garages to net be able to balance these wheels very well due to them being big wheels and center hole to the best for thair machines.... ideally you need them balanced then removed from the machine and then rechecked
dont use quickfit or similar go to a good small tyre place and explain the situation.

tyre pressures might also make your wheels hyper sensitive you need to make sure they are correct

wheel barrings need checking

also jack the front up and see if there is any play between the front passenger side and the front drivers side wheels... i shouldnt think you will have with yours being so new. but depends what life its had

my guess is they didnt ballance them very well or uneven tyre wear or pressures

for the oil light you need toolbox or terranosorus they are the best for that help

Hi regards the Oil Pressure Light. Yes this is a common fault.
There are 2 pressure switches on the 3.0ltr and the fault shows the pre check on the High pressure. it sticks.

The low is by the oil filter the High Pressure is the other side of the engine.

Mine has been doing this on and off for 9 months now.

interestesting my patrol with 3.0 seems slow to go out, the oil light that is despite recent
filter and oil change, am sure it really is a second or two but feels longer. doesnt come back on or stay on and a blip of throttle sorts even quicker.

Nice to see you sorted out your oil pressure light Ian............. not!

Back to your problem, It's your High pressure oil pressure switch thats at fault.
It position is just under your starter motor.... not the one next to the oil filter!
You need to feel it with your hands, you can just see the terminal connector.

You need along reach socket, I think 27mm from memory.

Dealer part only about £24. really common fault on the Tezza and patrol 3.0 engine.
Shat my pant when mine came on.

Basically, oil monitoring system does a self check on start up.

The high pressure switch is supposed to have a resting resistance, but it drifts on a faulty unit,
The oil light control, only uses the high pressure switch above 3000rpm.

I got mine posted to me from Harrets Nissan in Wakefield, ask for Julie in spares

Note.
I did pass this info on to Ian about 6 months ago.

Just to add:

The Black sensor is the low pressure unit.

The Green or Yellow sensor is the high pressure unit. (The one you need.)

DJ just not got round to it.
It doesnt do it very often. i drive down the hill stop the engine restart and it usually cures it.

I will do it one day when i get time.

Thanks

ok m8, I keep an eye on your oil level Ian, just in case.

Ian, once you have the sensor, it's a 5-10 minute job max.

Yes its a common problem, my 2005 3.0 is just about to have its 4th sensor fitted, they were subject to a Nissan recall in 2005.
Part number for sensor is 25240-2X901 it is a black sensor with a yellow band just below the connector or a complete kit for the modification can be obtained using 10007-2X90B, kit includes adaptor and thread seal.

Hello mate, got to replace my oil pressure switch this weekend, now on 3rd one, as for your 55 plate 3.0 commerical with 80k on it, mine has just done 131k also 3.0 commerical 55 plate and runs lovely so plenty left in yours :thumbsmatey!

Hi,

I have changed the one by the starter motor but i think the one near the oil filter is leaking oil on my terrano as I have a dripping, but I cannot find the sensor, I must be looking in the wrong place. Can someone tell me what it looks like and where it is located near the oil pump.

Also if I need to order this what am i asking for is it an oil pressure switch or a low pressure oil sensor, what does it look like, how many connectors are there.

Check for tyre or wheel distortion, especially tread run out or lumps/depressions in the tread or sidewall AFTER a good run to warm the tyres (may not be so obvious when cold). These faults are not always very evident but can cause the symptoms you are having. You may even have internal carcase damage which will only be seen after tyre removal. Balancing m/cs don't always manage to compensate for such problems & can even make the out of balance worse when the tyre warms up.
An easy test is to swap one front wheel at a time with a known good one & thereby eliminate the faulty one. I've had some real b******s in the past but then again I was stupid enough to own a Montego with run-flat tyres (default mode with the huge no. of punchers I had).
Best of luck, it's a process of elimination & hopefully will not be too serious.
