right just been off the phone to rick (solerman) and tried the hand over the outlet trick turbo spools but no pressure in their also when i took the outlet of the rattle came back so it looks like the play in the shaft is causing the rattle in the turbo due to lack of back pressure

Well if there is play in the shaft and the turbo rattles i'd say its pretty goosed but I aint no expert :augie
 
yes turbo goosed with the no pressure side of things lol

their can be in and out play from what rick said but no up and down play
 
just a query can i not put a bigger turbo into it then ???

Up and down is ok because the bearings run on oil they have this from new its endfloat thats the problem should have very little if any.You can check this on the garrett website

so in simple terms this means ???

right so a wobble in the shaft is ok ? i have seen some scoring to the inside of the case near the fan

how can i check this turbo properly ??

If its scored the case its scrap.The turbine should never touch the case.Wobble is normal as this is taken up with oil pressure but yours has gone way beyond that

So you know where the noise is coming from, if the scraping is on the inlet think where all the small bits could be going.
 
on the back of the ''turbo'' pipe there is a valve which will almost make my engine stall if I pull the sprung lever. Is this the egr ? I get a cloud of white smoke when I release the lever and rev the engine .
Could be yours is knackered or just stuck Karl ?


NO, thats the actuator which controls how much & when the boost comes in.

But please tell me youve changed your filters & oil to be double sure...

You wanna get all the crap out of the engine...

right had a major task taking the turbo unit off lol sheered one of the bolts on the exhaust and rounded on of the nuts on the exhaust side trying to remove it from their so had to cut that off lol

tried to take the down pipe out through the engine and that didnt work so all in started 11 and finished 5pm lol dont you just love turbos lol

so from the video's and from the pics what do we all think engine goosed or just turbo at fault

airfilter has been removed but fuel and oil filters still inplace

havnt done anything to the engine yet because if it is goosed then new mav/terrano it will be

just one with out a cracked head and hgf lol also i will have plenty of spares with this one
 
Excess end float/play + those pics = knackered :(:( (i reckon)

Just out of interest, have you confirmed theres enough play to allow the blades to score like that or has some foreign object gone in ?
 
NO, thats the actuator which controls how much & when the boost comes in.

thought the actuator was on top of the turbo ? This bit is on the back of the pipe that goes across the top of the engine.

Ya engine is ok, sounded fine but definitely change ya filters & oil :thumbs

If it was just crap that caused the scoring your lucky but i would be amazed if its ok with whats been said... get another turbo & youll be on the road again. :thumbs
