That's the idea, from what I've read. Trouble with fitting a standard pulley now though, would be that the tensioner wouldn't be strong enough to tension the belt properly.

I'd just be happy to have an alternator to put back on it. Soooooooo close

Kent bearings can supply any belt you want, just tell them the details, so a little mathematics are involved but reduction in pulley diameter = reduction in belt length by difference in circumference from one pulley to the other, Rick

I cant believe you had room to wire the wrong way terminal battery up,

We tried on mine and were miles off from being able to attach the terminals

Wasn't much to play with that's for sure. I actually wasn't certain I was going to manage it, to be honest. I had to release the tie on the live cable & make sure the battery was as far to the rear as I could get it. The earth cable was no problem though.

You would think the supplier would make sure such a fundamental issue was looked into before stating an item was a direct replacement. Idiots

Me niether:augie cables & clamps will be under unnecessary strain which over time could lead to breakages to clamp or the wiring
Charge up the battery you took off & get it drop test & if it's ok I would take that battery back & get your money back or get it changed for the correct one

Well still, if you bought it in a shop go back and make em swap it. They want know how long it's been attached to the car for, remember, it's their fault not yours so don't feel guilty in returning it, no garage would dream of arguing against that :lol :thumb2

If you orderd it online then I guess that's some hassle.

Still you might find stuff will be under stress, just be careful I guess, could be costly for a garages mistake

All fixed!!!! :clap

Couldn't get another alternator until tomorrow at the earliest, so with a 'What the hell' approach I did a diode test on the existing one. Passed that, so I thought I might as well strip it 'just in case'. When I took the stator out a whole lot of carbonised crap fell out from between the commutator terminals gave me pause for thought.

I refitted the alternator & cranked her over just to check, and lo & behold she breathes again :bow

Well done that man, did you check the length of the brushes? on most Bosch units you can get replacement brush/regulator parts, Rick

Thanks mate. Yep, when I split the stator case that was the first thing I checked. Absolutely top-notch condition. Never seen this before, I have to confess. Usualy if an alternator plays up it's toast, in my experience :nenau

This is a Hitachi unit, & the diode plate has the regulator and brushes as an integral unit. No opportunity for replacement if they were goosed, it would have to be a replacement unit :doh

All seems well, thankfully. This is my daily driver, so I was stressing a wee bit as I work 30-odd miles away

Fit a volt gauge so you can keep an eye on the charging rate & if it starts to play up again you should catch it in time:thumbs

The two on my off road motor play up regular with all the muck they have to cope with, if really bad I just hose them off for half an hour with the engine running, cleans the crud out of em and they are still going strong in spit of not turning a wheel for nearly 3 months, but going to Boxgrove on the 14th come what may, Rick

Cheers fellas. BB, you make a good point, lol!

Sweety? Funnily enough, that very thought crossed my mind too. Fleabay have some natty wee gauges for under a tenner so I might just get one ordered.

Rick, the truck sees her share of mud as she's my shooting wagon too. Might need to start giving the engine bay a bit of a hose down more often :thumb2
