Got the OH to take a couple of pictures as I'm at work.......looks very much as though I have a sprag clutch pulley right enough. It's a 2004 truck, so perhaps they fitted these as standard on the later ones? Or maybe that cover is just protecting a bolt head. I don't know :nenau

Or maybe my Troll is the Sports Rubbish version? :lol

Regardless though, I'm pretty sure if that was goosed I'd have been getting the battery light on, plus I'd have lost all power to the battery very quickly last night. New battery ordered, so we'll find out what's what later this afternoon :thumb2

Looks as though the alternator's goosed :hmh

Still 12 volts across the terminals when running, even with a brand new battery..........oh well, I suppose it IS a lot to ask for one to last 68k miles, isn't it? :doh

Binnacle cluster failure was down to the the 10 Ohm fuse marked 'Meter', it turns out.................

And the 2004 Troll does indeed have a sprag clutch on the alternator :thumb2

I have to say I know nothing about Patrols, or alternators with "sprag" clutches, can someone tell me what is the purpose/advantage? Rick

Sorry, it's a Terrano I have right enough......I meant to put a picture up last night, but the laptop was playing silly buggers & I couldn't be bother figuring out what I was doing wrong

Apparently the sprag clutch is to ease the load on the alternator on over-run. It allows the shaft to be driven one way, but effectively allows it to idea if the engine speed drops suddenly. According to the blurb it prevents a lot of excess vibration in the belt, reduces noise & extends the belt drivetrain component life :nenau

And it needs a special tool to get off that I don't have :doh

OH's picking me up a new alternator as we speak, so I hope to god the pulley's part of it or I'm in trouble. THAN we'll need to see if the alternator really is the problem, or if it's something I'm just not getting.

Engine starts and runs ok, so I'm assuming the ECU, etc are fine :bow

Funny you should say, as "Swifty" when he left, (long story) left behind a whole bunch of boxes with special kit in them most I am familiar with but one box had me thinking but never even open it, it is labeled "alternator free wheel pull extractors" Rick

That'll be worth its weight in gold as they look impossible to get off without it :thumb2

My saga continues...........having despatched the OH off to pick up the alternator, it transpires she decided to stop off & pick up some makeup. As a result, she missed the f*cking parts department by a half hour.

Looks like it'll be Monday at the earliest before I can get it and it'll mean fitting it in the pitch dark.

I'm not in the best of moods

Both motor factors in Dundee (the one on Clepington Road and D & A Factors) are open on a Sunday (might still be open now) :thumb2

Thanks mate. Checked them both, and the quickest they could get one for me is Monday. Had one sitting waiting for me at Autoparts, but the Fragrant One managed to screw that up for me until Monday :doh

'Priorities', huh?

Seems then that theses pulleys are to smooth out the non linear rotation of the crankshaft, (something similar to a prop shaft with UJs at each end, the gearbox end and the diff end rotate at steady speed but the shaft rotates in fits and starts) crankshaft does something similar but less pronounced, that is why a damper pulley is usually fitted to the crankshaft, but this is a well proven long life device, unlike this new alternator idea, problem is if you wanted to fit a standard pulley it will probably be a different diameter so needing a different belt, Rick

That's the idea, from what I've read. Trouble with fitting a standard pulley now though, would be that the tensioner wouldn't be strong enough to tension the belt properly.

I'd just be happy to have an alternator to put back on it. Soooooooo close

New Exide battery from Euro car Parts fitted £59. Terry is starting sweet again :thumb2

Told you to jump start it & check the alternators output before buying a new battery:doh:doh as it was looking like a shot alternator from the start:augie My last T2 had over 90K on the clock with the factory alternator & my mates had over 120K

I was £96 for a Yuasa........'standard replacement part', I was told. Curious then, how the f*cking terminals were the other way round

Simple you got given the wrong battery:lol:doh

Aye......great battery, but they'll be getting told the info' on their system is shyte :doh

Take it back & get the right battery other wise the cables will be stretched

Nah, it's on now. Had to route the live cable over the coolant tank, but other than that it's ok. Just pretty stupid to have it listed as a straight-swap when it's anything but
