Hi all, wondering if anyone has had this problem before? Our 2000 2.7 diesel T2 cut out the other day while reversing. Called RAC who diagnosed that there was no power to the fuel cutoff solenoid on the injector pump. They energised the solenoid and the car started, then ran ok for a couple of days. Then it happened again - the next RAC guy put a (fused) wire straight from the battery to the solenoid which we could connect up if it failed again. This isn't ideal as my other half is a mechanical muppet and would struggle to do anything under the bonnet. Anyone had this problem before? It's intermittent and seems to happen when reversing....wonder if there's any connection? Unlikely a wire is damaged so wondering if there's a failing sensor, or problem with the ignition switch (the car has done 130k+ miles but is in good mechanical order)

Ignition switch would be likely as they wear like a stick of chalk!!!!

only when reversing is a bit strange though, unless of course the movement/knee is hitting :nenau

Rayf is the man for this as I think the feed comes from the ECU, also may be a bad earth, I am not too well up after 99, Rick

Thanks for your replies guys - further update as the other half was away in the car today and it failed again - this time while driving normally along an A road. She noticed that the malfunction indicator on the dash was flashing (the little orange 'engine' light) just before it stopped. I've seen it doing this before, with the spare key, which it 'rejected' a good while back (if you put the key in the ignition switch and turned the ignition on, the light flashed and the engine would turn over, but not start). Since then we've just used the other key (which is pretty worn - you can take it out of the ignition when the engine's running!) Looks like it's starting to 'reject' this key too?

not quite the correct thinking mate, whatever you do DO NOT USE THE SPARE KEY the ECU is not recognising it and three times in a row try to start and all your keys will be blocked and will all have to be reset by plug in computer, this is completely unrelated to the physical aspects of the key, so the key is worn makes no difference to the electronics, bad connection in the switch could and this is easy and cheap to replace, and of course it could be a bad connection some place else, Rick

Further update - the malfunction light now stays on even when the engine is running. I put a voltmeter on the fuel cutoff switch on the back of the injection pump. It shows 10-11 volts when the ignition is first switched on, but after maybe 3-5 seconds it drops to zero and you can hear the cutoff closing. Any theories? The car will still start and run with a (fused) live feed run direct to the fuel cutoff. I'm thinking of running this feed though a switch on the dash and just manually switching the cutoff......not sure if that will work long term?

too complex electrically for me, I suggest you PM rayf as this is his field, Rick

Have you checked what the fault codes are ? the how to do it are in the down loads:thumbs

The RAC guy said it 'wasn't possible' to read the fault codes .... not sure why. Will investigate further tomorrow!

That's rubbish been having probs myself last couple of day as MIL came on whilst driving but light cleared on restart up so read the code as in down loads with engine running & MIL lit but also tried it again after switching off the engine & the fault code had been stored by the ECU even tho the MIL wasn't lit. All you need is a paper clip & your away:thumb2 if your plug contacts are different from the one shown in the down load look at my thread as the info is there http://www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23027

Thanks for all your comments guys. I checked out Sweety's link earlier today and managed to read the fault code (unlike the RAC guy) - sure enough, 36 (Fuel shut off solenoid 1 - malfunction). Have wired it back to a switch on the dash for now until I can trace the fault - suspecting there may be a failing relay somewhere....?
