Starting a few niggles on Granddads truck, firstly I've decided that I'm going to have a look at the Stereo as 50% of the time it's OK and the rest of the time it shows as in the picture below

I know there can be an issue with dry joints on the speedometers needing a touch of solder before the digits come back, I presume this is the same type of issue? Does anyone have any tips of where I should be looking? I've had a search and can't find any pics or workshop download for it.

Lastly, am I right in saying that people have experienced NATS lockouts through leaving their Stereo's disconnected for too long?

Thank you in advance :thumb2

I struggle to believe that removing a radio would immobilise a vehicle. I do know that my skoda radio is linked to the ecu for coding but that is antitheft device for radio and LazyFerret has said this about nissan radios. My old terrano had the single din radio and not long after buying it the radio did this, the garage removed the radio and it was gone for a few weeks for repair and the car was fine. When I bought the project truckit had the same radio as my old truck and same problem, I opened the radio but no sign of dry joints as the display connections arent soldered. So removed the radio and fitted another and thats been like that for over a year. Also my 05 plate ahd a non standard radio fitted and I owned that for over a year and again no issues with lockouts.

Urgh :doh Not what I wanted to hear, I'll have to see if I can source a new one from somewhere :doh

Don't forget the hazard switch.

Or how about taking it to a repairer, could get the code at the same time maybe?

Looks as if a new LCD has to be fitted to rectify the issue after doing a bit of searching online, problem is finding one, I'll just have to find one 2nd hand with a code

As already mentioned there are no real solder joints for the display. The cable goes straight into the edge of the display, between the two laminated bits of glass, and you can see that over the years, damp has also got in there. When I "attacked" the one in Jiggley, I even tried a Heat gun, but all that did was cause the cable to shrivel up, so had to stop that pretty rapidly.

Taking the radio out and putting it back in, has no problems for the car, and in fact, I even started and moved the car while the radio was out. I believe the issue is the other way round, and it is the radio that is linked to the ECU, so it's changing the radio over from one car to another that is more likely to cause an issue, and from what I have read, the problem is the new radio will not work as it will not get the correct unlock code from the ECU.

I did wonder about changing just the LCD display over, but have not found one with a working display yet.

Is it temperature influenced ?
Quite common for LCD's not to work if vehicle is kept outside in winter. Display often returns during warmer weather.
Its related to how LCD's work.
