New boots at last

Hi guys.
I am at last getting new tyres.
But got a dilemma... I'm on 275/65/r17
I want to get BF Goodridge AT KO2 but they are 265/70/R17 or 285/70/R17
So should I go fatter or thinner?
Pro's and con's please.
Price difference £50. Each

Iam would say thinner

I would go for the thinner every time as fatter might give you sidewall wobble that will make the steering vague.

Going fatter will cost more with perhaps a marginal gain in ride comfort that you will gain anyway going from 65 to 70 section tyres.

OK... if you are using the same rims, they have a certain width, eg 8"
You need to check if your rim is within the approved range for your new tyre, see spec for tyre. Must be the actual tyre, as specs vary across manufacturers.

This might be the deciding factor in eliminating one type anyway. :nenau

Rustic is right in everything that he says on this one, but if you could have either fitted i would go for the thinner, they are still wider that a terrano's so will give plenty of grip.

I'd go against the grain and suggest you're better going wider than thinner as the thinner tyre won't brake quite as well as your normal tyre as there's slightly less rubber in contact with the road. It is only 10mm difference though to your current tyres but personally I've only ever gone up in width never down.

With regard to rim size if I remember correctly the 17" Trol rims are 8" wide (check though) in which case I would bet good money that 285 width tyres will fit them fine. My STT's are 285s on 8" wide rims.

What you need to think about though is tyre diameter as your current tyres are 31.1", the 270 ATs will be 31.6" and the 285 ATs will be 32.7". In the flesh the tyres will likely be slightly larger in diameter as the tread is AT so chunkier then a normal road tyre.

Trols can run fine with up to 32" tyres on standard suspension but without a 2" lift you may find you rub on articulation with the larger tyres but on normal use you would be okay. If you haven't upgraded your rear springs yet though (I know you sag with the tin tent on) I would be tempted to go with the smaller diameter tyre (I know, I know that's the thinner tyre! ).

you will not notice any roll with the BFG A/T s
I put 245 75 16's on my Ford Ranger in place of the 245 70 16 Dullers that it came with. what a difference.
the wear rate of the BFG's is also phenomenal at 40k the casting bobbles had just warn off and they still looked like new:thumb2
theoretical difference in diameter is about 4Cm so only 2cm on the radius that's nowt to worry about either.
as for the width:naughty 10mm nowt either.
my spare is the same as yours and that is happy with the 12.5" tyres which equate to about a 315.
the extra £50 will be worth it as they will look the Mutts too.

Cheers for your input guys.
The skinny ones are better fuel economy, are better in snow and probably better in mud.
The fatties are better for breaking and aesthetics.
So basically it coming down to am I a tart or not?

Had a look but couldn't find KO2's 285s at that price. I've got to have the 3 peaks s&m on for Germany and Norway. There are apparently a summer version in Germany which is no good to me.

In all seriousness the deciding factor is the breaking. When towing the caravan and the kayak on top and 6 people we are over 5 tonne. Seeing we're going from road to all terrain I need as much rubber as possible on the road.
