With the new family car a 04 ZD30 Patrol I started looking more seriously into these reliability mods and they just seem like a never ending list of things to do. How far, if at all do you go with it?

The way I read it, what you need is:

Boost gauge
EGT gauge
May as well get oil pressure gauge as the number 2? sensor will fail at some point
Dawes valve
Needle valve
Provent 200 catch can and relevant pipe work
Egr blank - WILL THIS NOW FAIL AN MOT HAVING A BLANK IN?
Intercooler upgrade, possible with a reverse flow
Exhaust system
Change glow plugs to steel tipped
Change the electrical circuit on the glow plugs so they don't stay on as long.

Bloody hell!

How far down that list do you need to go if at all? Considering there are loads off 04 plate Patrols that are standard that have done easily 130, 140, 150k milages. Standard being important there I think.

So what do I need to do in reality for future proofing for a reliable truck.
I'm worried that I start messing with it for no reason and making it worse.

Please disscuss.

You don't need to do any of the above on an 04 patrol as they had sorted all the issues from the previous years. Mine is still stock with 110k on it. Keep it well serviced and you should be relatively problem free.

That's what I'm thinking, this truck is maintained very very well with only 81k miles on it so hoping it will be fine as is. I would love to stick a dawes valve and needle valve in but to do so you will need all the gauges.

Wheelie obviously has a lot of faith in his truck too, considering the trip he's just done and he'll be in Wales this month as well!!
I reckon you will have more piece of mind leaving it standard than if you "improved" it :D
Barrbeast will be along at some point with some sound knowledge and advice :bow:thumbs

Looking forward to the Wales meet-up.
We can have a “show & tell” time.:thumb2
If I can jump in here?
I’ve carried out nearly all of the mods on Martins list.
Everybody’s reasons and requirements are different.
I liked the Patrol I have, even though it was an MOT failure when I viewed it.
It was the blank canvas I was looking for, and honest.
I had nothing to lose in doing the NADS work in a methodical manner. (2yrs)
What I have now is a Patrol with fantastic performance and reliability, together with very acceptable fuel economy.
She’s proved herself now on three continental trips Alps, Ardennes & more recently the Pyrenees.
Basically it’s trust. I can trust my vehicle to get me there and back in safety and comfort. This is because I’m familiar with the truck through the work I’ve done.
I think, just be happy with what you have with any modifications or not.

Then get out in the sunshine, drive it, enjoy it!
Just my bit.
See you in Wales!

With your experience what would you say is the best to do reliability or all round good things to do wise?

Hi Martin

Drive her for a good while first and get used to how she behaves on the motorway with long drags especially etc.
You can use Wales to check the low box and drivetrain is ok. Probably has not been put into low very much, if ever with the relatively low miles on the clock.

Definitely put the Provent in. The engine will run better for it. Cleaner and less smelly without all the crankcase crap staying in.
I know you know your stuff Martin. This is just how I would take a soft approach.

Thanks mate :thumb2

If the red truck is not finished I'll see about taking this however it is standard with rubbish road tyres on and no snorkel so not sure if I'd have to go shotgun

I'll be on my own for the trip.
Will be great to have a buddy. Either way will be good to catch up.
Fingers crossed for Big Red being ready though!:thumb2

Sweet!

'Big Red' I like that, might have to steal that one :lol

I wouldn't be worried about not having a snorkel Martin, just got to be careful going through deep water :thumbs

Mod wise, I'd definitely fit a provent. If you're not modding it much I wouldn't worry too much about proper NADS.

I blanked the EGR on my 04 but I didn't fit NADS, instead I adjusted the vnt stop on the turbo to tweak the spool rate slightly (the suggested mod before NADS came on the scene). Drove great after and even better after taking out the silencers on the exhaust ;)

Was that all that was done on yours? It drove great.

With the new MOT, is the egr blank on this age of truck a instant fail now though if you know.

Yeh she was a good runner (and still going as far as I know) :D Snorkel and the HD clutch and solid flywheel were the only other mods that would have affected performance :nenau

If you told them about it I guess the blank would be a fail but the plate just replaces a gasket so there's no outward indication its been done, they'd have to dismantle it to find out :thumbs

Exhaust is next for me.
The adjustment to the VNT is only slight but does have a positive effect. I gave mine half a turn if I remember.

Any change in your circumstances Rob?
Can you come to Wales?:nenau

I reckon folk are worrying too much about the new mot regs bud plus yours is an 04, 08 onwards is what's affected really mate :thumb2 Mine doesn't even have an egr valve OR a cat and it passed, I think they only do a smoke test!!
