How easy is it to get to the connections/wires/cluster at the back?

My N/S rear indicator has developed an intermittent fault (i.e. not working and causing double-speed on the fronts), so far only cured with a small thump every now and then :augie

I've read a few threads and know I have to go check the connector and wiring, but I'm not really sure where to start. How do I get to the back of the cluster to see what's occurring?

One day I might have a week without a new fault appearing...

Easiest way is unscrew the light unit saves getting underneath

Your T2 is much later than mine, so may be different, but on the early ones the bumper-mounted light assembly is removed by undoing the four screws, one in each corner - the whole assembly then simply drops out and hangs by the cables
.
It sounds as though you have a poor connection to the indicator bulb on the side that's giving you the problem - turn the cable/socket assembly anti-clockwise and pull it out.
Remove the bulb and give the lead contact on the bottom and the rest of the metal part a gentle rub with some wire wool or a pot scrubber and refit which is a reverse of the above.

Try the indicator before screwing the lamp assembly back into the bumper (just in case it still doesn't work)

Good call sir! :thumbs

Just been out and had a fiddle with it and it does indeed seem to be the bulb holder. Much faffing about with the bulb on the connectors got it working, but as soon as I put the cluster back in it packed up again :doh

Not much more I can do during lunch break. Will have to see if I can have another look at it tonight

I always recommend WD40 or similar, use a touch of glass paper on the bulb ends.

It's a poor poor design for the wiring at the clusters, which leaves the wires open to the elements. Over time ALL the wires to the light clusters get corroded inside. The copper inside goes green and very brittle. A new cluster from Nissan is not expensive, I called the other week and he said £38. Which is not bad considering it comes with the bulb holders (can't buy the holders individually) and the plug on the end which joins the cluster to the wiring loom. (See my thread on bulb holder mod)
One day I lost the Fuel Gauge, Number plate lights, A rear passenger sidelight, something else on the dash that I cant recall. I'm lucky that I have a friend who is a wizz at all things electrical and he had it sorted in no time. 2 broken wires, passenger side rear, but not at the cluster. It was pre cluster if that makes sense. (You can see when you get the cluster off) Brittle corroded wires. Anyway sparky mate repaired and heatshrinked.

Edit: Also twisting the bulb holders in and out to change a bulb is not gonna help the corroded wires.

The wires are all a bit crap under the back bumper, but all still working, which does surprise me

Managed to sort the bulb holder with a bit of faffing and now it seems to be working, although I'm wondering how long it will be before the bulb loosens and loses connection again :hmh

Definitely right about that crap design
