hi all
i have a standard 2003 swb terrano with standard 16" wheels fitted with 235/70/16 tyres
im buying some tyres for the snow, should i buy mud terrain or all terrain for the snow?
also can i fit bigger tyres ie. 255/65/16. i dont want to put the speedo out so what size will be ok? or shall i just put the original 235/70/16 back on?
oh and merry christmas everyone :)

Depends where your'e going and what the conditions will be like. Most mud tyres I've seen are 80% off-road 20% on-road. Good grip if it's slippery but won't grip so well or last as long on the road. See the tyres thread for more opinions.

bit of a difference in opinion here also depends what you will use it for after the snow as well

a decent set of a/t's should be fine like grabbers or coopers

Again depends on what sort of snow?:augie
Last weekend up in the er woods:sly it was all virgin snow where we were off piste:D In those conditions open tread muds were way better than the other guys on at's.
Once your on the mush on the road though things get very different, you need a good water shifting tyre, on the ice they're all krap unless you've got studs in them:naughty

depends how much modding you want to do

31's if modded 30's without

Tyres are going on a patrol?
Do a search as tyres on patrols I dont know.
It's been discussed recently though;)
If it is the T2 then 31s will go on if you trim the plastics and take the mud flaps off.

as i said the car is tottaly standard, i aint doin any mods and want to keep the speedo correct.

2003 t2

the speedo is out by 5mph normally so might not make much difference in the end

If you don't want any speedo reading changes I'd stick with the same size you have now. If your buying just for the snow I'd just get AT's.

1st choice : alpine tyres
2nd choice : General Grabber AT2's
3rd choice : your feet :)

Having MT's on my T2 and AT2's on my Patrol... AT's win hands down. MT's (I have Kumlos KL71's) are crap on snow and even worse on ice

tyres

I run general grabbers at 2 's 31x 10.5 x 15 and they have been great, in the snow and all round use

nenook:thumb2

noise is not a problem. the complete lack of grip is

taking the T2 out this weekend for some snowy laning, will report back

The noise thing is complete ballox, they're mucho quiet for a mud tyre :thumbs
Grip wise I've found them better than my Insa special tracks I had before, and seem to keep me up with the BFG mud shod landies with no bother,so there:p
There were some earlier models of the KLs that didnt wear very well and I think these are often confused in "my mate" tales.
The KL71s weak point that I can see is only when it's proper wet boggy claggy mud, they dont seem to self clean then:doh but then I wonder what else would:augie

well i have bridgestone duellers h/t tyres on ..... they coped very well with the recent snow /ice , and are very quiet on the roads :D
