Hi All

Sorry to be asking alot of questions but I'm new and never had a vehicle like this before.

Basically i have found an oil leak. It appears to be coming from the oil filter. Is this a known fault and can the filter loosen or is there another common area for leakage higher up? I am getting the oil and filter changed on Monday, which may help to sort it out.

The other issue is what oil to use. I know that according to the handbook it should be 10/30W but when my wife went to the local motor factors with the handbook, she came out with 5/30W! According to the handbook this should not be used for normal driving but the motor factors said that this is what is to be used.

What oil do you all use?

Thanks
Lee

oil leak, i think is from a poor fitting filter. but i could be wrong, they can be a bugger to change too....

im getting good at this helping lark me!

I've just bought 10w/40 for my 2.7TDi if that helps - based on the above charts from NIssan not some spurios source that seems tobe correct.

changed my oil &filter yesterday and the guy in the shop looked it up and said 5w/30, semi synthetic. so thats what it got. :thumb2

I use 15W/40 as preferred grade stated in workshop manual.

I would suggest that a 30-grade oil is a little thin to use in these old style heavy-duty engines, may be ok in a Petrol.

Recommended by Nissan for outside temperatures between -30 and +15 C - best hope we have a cool summer.

thanks Terranosaurus, i'll have a word monday, he checked his book and showed me what was listed, i assumed that as the nissan is 12 yrs old and oil has come a longway that the manual might be outdated if you know what i mean, i will post what happens, thanks again. :thumb2

This is what happened to my wife. She went in with the book. I was expecting her to come out with 10/30 or 10/40. The fellow at the motor factors looked in a book and said that 5/30 is what was needed. I have the handbook and like zippy showed, nissan state that this oild should only be used below 0oC. So who to believe - Nissan or the motor factors???

Who built the engine?

Point taken though god knows how many people have got the wrong oil in their engines! Loads of people use this motorfactors and I would have trusted their judgement except I had been reading the owners manual and their recommendation was just so diferent from the manuals.

Hey ho at least it was only a top up and on monday its getting a complete oild and filter change - I'll tell the garage what oil to use!

thanks
