I'm looking at buying a Gilera Runner FX 125cc on a 1999 "V" Plate from my neighbour as a project, sold as seen for what I think is a very good price.

It's going to need some attention and more importantly, even when I've connected my truck battery to it, it won't turn over on the electrics and none of the lights work. The only thing that comes on is the horn and the battery and petrol light on the dash :/

I'm dead keen on taking this on as a project, they are really nippy fun little scooters by all accounts and will come in very handy beating the traffic :naughty

He has owned it from new but for the last 10 years it's been stood in the garage as he left it, needs a bit of a clean, but looks like a straight bit of kit?

So this would be my first bike I'd legally have ever ridden on the road should I get it. It looks a really really cool sporty little scooter and the more videos online I see and the more I read up on them, the more I think I've made my mind up, I've even seen 172cc Cylinder heads and all sorts

I'm just worried about it not starting, what do you think guys?

Any guys here decent with Bikes and Scooters?

But it’s got two wheels missing, it’ll fall over when you get out. There’s no roof or heater, it’ll be like driving a Land Rover.

Just this...

But apart from tinkering with it, I have no wide or in depth knowledge of bike/scooter mechanics! :doh

Bike or Scooter... I do love a bit of two wheel fun! :naughty

check engine has not seized due to being stood for so long or corrosion in starter wiring etc simple machine should be fun project to get something to run that does not at first parts will be cheap etc go for it

spray it pink and change your name to Ken:lol:lol:lol:lol:lol

I've tried to kick it over and it didn't want to know.

I know very little about 2 stroke engines, more worried that I don't have electrics :(

check all the earth points and a good battery there should also be a main fuse is it a 6 or 12 volt system :nenau

12v System, there was one 25amp fuse that I've replaced anyway even though it was OK and made no difference, I've been trying not to be too eager in getting it started in front of the neighbour as he's told me that if it starts and runs he wouldn't take any less than £500

Pour some 2 stroke oil down the barrel and leave it for a few days.

Strip the panels off to bare chassis and engine, see if you can turn the engine crank over with a spanner very gently, keep the 2 stroke oil in the pot.

DO NOT turn it over dry......:doh

See what happens, but second the opinion about checking for corrosion in electrics....:thumb2

Having withdrawal symptoms, having just sold the Harley.......:nenau

But if you get it started then he ups the price, you can charge him labour for the difference... :p
I was watching some vids of bikes lastnight, there's one where the rider gets his head down, not his knee, not his elbow, but his bloody noggin!
I've found some motorbike racks for the back of the truck. Hmm!

First thing if its been stood any length of time is empty out all the old petrol that includes whats in the carburetor, and add new.
Then check that you are getting a spark, take the plug out and put it in the HT lead cap ,touch the threaded bit against a piece of the engine to form a connection and kick it over. you should see a spark. If not change the plug.
if there is still no spark it is probably the coil that needs replacing.
I also have a gilera 125 but it's a bit different, also I have the Honda Pan

Seriously pal. It's not worth much that old and in that state. There's not a lot that will stop a 2 stroke run but must have clean petrol and air. Wiring is a nightmare on something that has stood for ages especially in damp conditions. I'd offer £150 at most as it stands. There's plenty to be had otherwise and you might even find a 4 stroke. :thumb2

Yeah well as soon as he said he I knew that it only meant one thing, I don't think he likes me poking and prodding around it to find that there may be something else wrong with it to put me off the sale.

Good to know you are familiar with one :thumb2 How is it different? Do you have the 180cc one? I'll try all of your points above as well mate

I beg to differ mate, have a look around, these Gilera 125cc scooters seem to hold their value well and this one is a very tidy example when it's been washed of it's current moss content, but again, that's just making it look a bit dull and shabby at the moment which is doing wonders for me in negotiating :naughty

It's been stored in a dry garage and he's had it from new, at leats I know some 17 year old hasn't had it an been pulling it onto it's back wheel while he waves at girls in tracksuits near the local McDonalds the slamming it back on the floor constantly.

Seems like a good bit of fun to me and a great way to enter the bike scene, being limited to 125cc until I do the Module 1 and 2 as well is probably a good idea as I was a bit of a wild child on bikes as a youngster, was easy back then, too young to go to jail and if it didn't run, Dad would pay one of his mates to repair it :lol :lol

Also Simon

Let's see some of those racks as this is an idea I've already had :)
