Oh dear, lower pulley seems to have broken in half.

Its the one for the power steering and something else but its dark and I can't see properly.

My question is if I can get the belts out of the way and ensurre whats left of the pulley doesn't spin out and cause damage can I drive the car a short distance to get it into my garage without those belts? I think I may have to remove all the belts?

If I cant move it then it means working in outdoors and its too cold and too wet.

Once it is in the garage I can have a good look and see what the damage is.

Has this happened to any one else? Does this sound like a pig of a job?

Good news is this may mean I can buy a few more tools!:thumbs

Its a 2003 2.7tdi.

Slightly hyper with worry but strangely excited about getting me hands greasy!

most rare, almost unheard of, are you sure? is it the adjusting pulley? if so it is more likely the bearing has collapsed, Rick

depends how far you need to drive but removing the PS belt will sort it and as it is the outer one the alternator and water pump will work just fine, this is assuming you have "V" belts, Rick

I think so, Am i right in saying there are 2 pulley wheels joined as one? From what I can see the bit that holds the belt has come away from the engine block and seems to slide / moves backwards and forward but won't come off completely as there is something in the way.

Sorry Im being a bit vague but until I can get her undercover to have a proper look that's about as much as I can say.

You reckon it'll be OK to run so I can get her into the garage? She is just outside of it at the momnet but it made such a creeching racket that i just stopped where I was.

Its a bit tight ( no power steering ) and a bit of a ramp to push up and I'm on me jack at the moment.

yes jus remove the PS belt and all is good, but without PS you may have to do a few shunts, but that is all, Rick

Cheers for that Rick!

Once I've worked out what's happened I'm pretty certain ill be back for more help and advice!

Definatley the lower pulley with the 3 belts!

I have in my hand the bit where the belts go, it just slid off no nuts or anything.

I did find on the drive a strip of black rubber....is that supposed to go between the belt holder and the big shiny wheel that sticks out from the engine? ( sorry if I'm getting too technical:) )

So I'm at a bit of a loss what to do next.

Help!!!

Dave

I'm guessing the black rubber thing sits between the pulley wheel and the shiny wheel?

I'd have a look in the workshop manual download. I think there is probably an exploded diagram that will show what arrangement of parts there should be.

:thumb2

Looking at the w/shop manual it looks like its one piece:nenau

And there looks like there are timing marks on it too....I feel this is getting complicated.

Still wanted something to get me teeth into.

So, can anyone tell me what I do next?

Cheers

Ahhhhhhhh.....harmonic balancer! Now I understand what it is

Woo hoo I can buy the remover!

That's madness!!!!! I'm glad it didn't come off while you were moving!!! How did you know it was broken? I presume it was only the tension of the belts that was stopping it from dropping off :nenau

You need to get yourself a new crankshaft pulley, I have some for the 2.7 but no idea if the 3 is the same, you will need to remove the large bolt in the centre and pull what is left of the pulley off, slide on the new and do the bolt up real tight, incidentally all Terranos have this pulley and they rarely give trouble, the three parts were bonded together, Rick

Rick he has a 2.7 :nenau

wonder were I got that idea, think I was confusing it with the fact his is a 2000 plus year so still not sure if a 98 pulley will fit, two criteria, crankshaft diameter and timing case oil seal diameter, but he is probably better going to a scrappy in Spain, Rick

Thanks chaps.

So, somewhat of a novice here and a ton of questions

Do I have to do anything to stop the engine turning when I undo the big but?

Should I remove the fan?

Radiator is removed but do I need to remove the air con one?

The cars still outside, now we know what the problem is is it still safe to drive? ( Rick, I know you said yes, but we didn't know it was affecting all 3 belts)

Blimey, prices for new range from £300+ to less than £60! Looks like I'll be going for the lower end!

Anything else I should have a look at while I'm faffing about in this area?

Cheers
