Hello chaps

Can anyone on here give me any clues/reasons as to why the mpg on my 98 T2 auto has dropped to 16?

I get this towing but I don't seem to get much more when solo.

If I can't get it sorted out it's going.

16mpg is a bit steep I think!

Thanking you in advance

Andy

sounds very thirsty, mine is a manual and I get 28/30 solo and over 24mpg towing caravan.
Can only suggest, brakes binding, front hubs locked in, fuel leak or heavy right foot. Not much help, but someone who has had the same problem will be along soon. regards bri

Are you getting any other symptoms? Smoke of any kind, rough running, poor acceleration, reluctance to exceed certain revs etc..?

When did you last have your air filter changed? Checked your fuel filter? MAF clean...?

It could poss be a dieing maf unit or you may have a mini filter fitted into the banjo bolt that is partly blocked:rolleyes:

or at the risk of asking the completely obvious, what pressure are your tyres at and when did you last check?

Reason for mentioning that is a recent conversation with a fleet manager for hgv tractors left me gobsmacked just how much extra fuel one tyre out can cost on a long run. Cant remember the exact figures so no bullshit but it was jaw dropping.

i think youll have every one running to check there now!!

Ill do mine tomorrow!

No more smoke than usual, no rough running, turbo kicks in when it should (although initial acceleration from rest does seem a little slow).

Had the car serviced a couple of months ago and changed air filter to K&N.

Tyre pressures are changed when towing and then changed again after. The tyres are only a few weeks old.

'No more smoke than usual'...does that mean you have some and how much/colour/when?

The K&N filter ought to be giving you a couple more mpg to be frank but did its fitting coincide with the loss of mpg or did that come later (something could have been disturbed on fitment if there is correlation..)? Is it the type that fits in the existing airbox or the full induction version (cone-shaped)?

And assume you are using the tyre pressures from the door sticker?

all good points, also check small vac pipes on inlet system, my mav had one split and was a bit dead on acceleration and mpg was rubbish

Hi,

Really do not know much about this but...

I know on Land Rovers the oil off none standard air filters can screw up the Air flow Meters, not sure it it's the same with Diesel Nissans as i've got the 2.4 Petrol.!!

May be worth a check though.

I think thats a bit of an urban myth.....the oil on the K&N is sprayed on and it would have to be seriously, seriously soaked for any to get through on to the MAF - and even if it did, it would just upset the reading temporarily....remember the MAF is nothing more sophisticated than a bit of wire in the breeze - what a bit of oil going to do to it????

I think I've cracked it guys.

Fitted a new (to me) MAF sensor and mpg has improved drastically. :thumbs

Now to sort out the vibration on the front end !!!!! :doh

Getting tracking/wheel balance checked Tuesday and going to book a session with a diagnostics reader.

I may be keeping the old girl a bit longer now.

what could it be if you don,t have a maf sensor like mine 2.7 td mistral 1995

make sure both your hubs are disengaged! and clean the mini (banjo) filter, also does the steering pull? maybe brake sliders need cleaning and greasing?

Plank, what's that about the steering pulling? mine pulls left like a b£$"^&d. Any ideas?

feel the hubs after a run is one side hot? is sounds like you may have a stuck caliper, the sliders can be cleaned and re greased and away you go! though check you pads and discs while you are on the job!

Do sometimes have a hot hub,had it checked (the caliper and pins) seemed ok but the problem is still there.

i would make sure the pins have been stripped out cleaned and greased not just looked at!

the other posibility is a stuck hub, putting you in permanent 3 wheel drive!

check the downloads for a stripping and cleaning section!
