So, while never the quietest of cars I've owned I'm starting to get a little worried about the rattles and shakes. The descriptions are a bit vague but I'm struggling to put it into words. Hopefully someone will know what I'm going on about.

The first rattle is on start up and stops when I put my foot on the clutch. Seems to disappear when the car is warmed up. Always had this but it seems to be getting louder. Any suggestions as to what to look for when I climb underneath?

The transfer stick has started to shake / vibrate. ( quite a lot ). However the gearstick is good with no vibrations at all ( othef than what you can feel normally when holding the stick)

Something, somewhere is vibrating / groaning when low down on the revs and need to change gear. I've been underneath and can't find anything loose and have even removed the undertray but its still there.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Dave

The first rattle, (clutch), may well be the clutch release bearing starting to get worn. Can't help on the rest. Sorry.

Good luck!

Common gearbox noise on 2.7 is the lay shaft bearing.
Don't have that issue anymore with my auto.

Gearbox rattle, nothing to worry about, just check the oil level..

Check the transfer box oil and possibly the linkage to the transfer lever for loose bolts etc

if you have auto hubs check the rear prop UJs, if you are unsure remove the 4 rear shaft bolt then you can feel the rear UJ with ease and the front one by turning the prop at an angle, both should be silky smooth, if fixed hubs do the same on the front shaft, Rick

Any suggestions?

Cheers

I tried embedding my reply but system did not like it so had to add this, Rick

Gents, i hate to admit it and im a bit embarrassed, but I'm a somewhat confused about the hubs...bear with me.

Fixed hubs and auto? I don't really get what you mean.

Are they obviously different and what do they do?

From other post I've seen if I have fixed front hubs then the prop will turn. Does that mean its permanent 4x4? ( like my old 90?). It can't be because of the transfer stick...my head hurts!!

Really sorry if this is a bit dense....I'm having a very bad week so far.

Can someone point me in the general direction of an idiots guide?

OK Auto hubs lock in only when you select 4 wheel, and lock out again when you come out of 4 wheel, Fixed hubs are that, they are driving all the time, which means that the front drive shafts/diff and prop shaft are turning when on the road, ( as Nissan at the same time decided to not put greasers on the prop, the props fail) you are only in 4 wheel when you select it in the cab, Manual hubs you have to get out in the mud and twist the blighter's to lock them, then select 4 wheel and you are away, Rick

As standard on your age truck it will have fixed hubs. This means the front drive shafts will always be turning with the wheels, back to the transfer box which will be dis engaged in normal driving. The older trucks have free wheeling hubs, either auto engage or manual engage. With them not engaged the front props will not be turning with the wheels.
This will be unless yours had fwh fitted at a later date. A photo of the front wheel centre will confirm things.
Hope this helps.
